The Times and Democrat – In a record bailout of a private company, the government on Monday provided a new $150 billion financial-rescue package to troubled insurance giant American International Group, including $40 billion for partial ownership.
The action, announced by the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department, was taken as it became increasingly clear that an original financial lifeline thrown to AIG in September would be insufficient to stabilize the teetering company. All told, the moves boost aid to the company to more than $150 billion.
Fed officials, however, expressed confidence that the money would be repaid to taxpayers.
The $40 billion infusion comes from the recently enacted $700 billion financial bailout package. The government is buying preferred shares of AIG stock, giving taxpayers an ownership stake in the company. In turn, restrictions will be placed on executive compensation at the firm.
Forbes – The hedge fund sector has to date weathered market volitality better than the banking sector, since no large bellwether hedge fund has yet gone bankrupt. Nonetheless, hedge funds are expecting a wave of redemptions, as investors move to safer investments and reconsider their commitments to the sector.
Hedge fund sector resilience? Whereas banking sector difficulties have provoked a host of policy responses, including Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s now-moribund $700 billion bailout package–no hedge fund problem has yet necessitated a similar systemic response. The apparent resilience of the sector is particularly striking given that recent estimates suggest that the $2 trillion hedge fund industry accounts for approximately 30% of U.S. equity and bond trades (although volatile market conditions have led many managers to shift greater percentages of their holdings into cash-equivalents).
New York (HedgeCo.Net) – Senate leaders will vote today on the $700 billion bailout package, after some key changes were implemented including tax breaks and higher limits for insured bank deposits.
The new limit proposals are something that both candidates and President Bush agree upon, leading some to believe that the bailout package, in its current incarnation, will finally be passed through Congress.
Though the details of the plan are not readily available, lawmakers are hoping that the changes will appeal to those republicans who were knocked the first proposal, while keeping the democrats who are otherwise against generous tax incentives for businesses.
“It has been determined, in our judgment, this is the best thing to move forward,” said Democratic Senator Harry Reid of Nevada.
While the bill has certain new elements to it, including extensions of unemployment along with tax credits for low income home-owners, the basic principle of the government purchasing $700 billion worth of bad debt and eventually re-selling them remains the same. The bill also has some room for new additions, though Christopher Dodd, Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee warns, “Opening this up all over again to other things may doom it.”
Markets tanked following the rejection of the initial proposal on Monday, with the Dow Jones industrial average plummeting 778 points. Though the markets regained some vigor on Tuesday, many lawmakers felt a strong urgency to get a plan passed.
The FDIC currently insures up to $100,000 per account. The new proposal might see an increase in that amount to $250,000.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is confident about the new plan, telling President Bush that “Working together, we are confident we will pass a responsible bill in the very near future.”

New York (HedgeCo.Net) – JPMorgan Chase & Co. has purchased Washington Mutual’s branch network for $1.9 billion, making them the largest U.S. bank by deposits. The deal was encouraged by the U.S. government after consumers withdrew over $16 billion from the nation’s largest savings and loan in the latter half of September.
WaMu was having trouble finding a buyer after the Treasury’s proposed $700 billion bailout package created reluctance among would-be investors. Others companies said to have been considering an offer included Citigroup and Wells Fargo.
Many believed that WaMu was next in line to sink thanks to over $180 billion in outstanding mortgage-related loans and the paranoia of a pending liquidity crunch. On top of that, Standard & Poors once again cut WaMu’s ratings to CCC from BB-, though the company was quick to quell any fears associated with the downgrade.
"Washington Mutual Bank’s deposit rating from Standard & Poor’s continues to be investment grade and it is important to note that Standard & Poor’s rating actions do not affect the safety of customer deposits, which are insured up to the limits allowed by the FDIC," said WaMu in a recent statement.
Washington Mutual continued to deny rumors of any problems. The bank recently stated they had over $50 billion in liquidity despite being hit hard by the subprime mortgage fallout.
It was just a few months ago that WaMu rejected a bid from JPMorgan for about $4 a share, even after JPMorgan urged the bank to consider a deal before the economy got worse.
JPMorgan, who also acquired Bear Stearns earlier this year, will not inherit WaMu’s liabilities, including claims by shareholders and subordinated and senior debt holders. By purchasing WaMu, Chase can now increase their presence on the West Coast and in Florida.
