Models Hold Their Own Amidst Selling

New York (HedgeCo.Net) Last week saw selling hit the overall market, especially on Friday. In fact, if not for Friday’s big selloff, the indices would have gained ground on the week. Earnings were a mixed bag for the most part, but what got investors spooked on Friday were concerns over a possible Greek default and actions taken by Chinese securities regulators tightening margin lending.

Despite the weakness in the overall market, the HedgeCoVest models continued to outpace for the week as well as the YTD returns. Last week saw the S&P lose 0.99%. The mock portfolio invested equally across all models would have lost 0.67%, one invested in the top 10 models would have lost 0.37% and one invested in the top five models would have gained 0.67%.

Looking at the YTD numbers, the All HedgeCoVest Portfolio is up 2.85%, the portfolio of the top 10 models is up 3.86% and the portfolio of the top five models is up 6.78%.

Turning our attention to the composite models, a portfolio invested in all five of the long-only models would have gained 0.17% last week, a portfolio invested in all five of the long-short models would have gained 0.40% and a portfolio invested in the four short-only models would have gained 0.38% on the week.

The YTD performance shows the long-only models up 8.82%, the long/short models up 5.5% and the short-only models are down 0.47%. A portfolio constructed with equal allocations to all 14 composite models would be up 4.98% YTD.
