Wall Street Journal – One of the U.K.’s biggest pension plans is moving forward with a strategy to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in alternative assets, potentially including hedge funds for the first time.
The £10.6 billion ($16.8 billion) U.K. pension fund for oil company Royal Dutch Shell Group PLC agreed to a new strategic investment plan over the summer, according to a recent report to members of the pension plan. This includes a 5% allocation to alternative assets — a category that includes hedge funds, infrastructure, and commodity funds. The allocation will come on top of the 5% it already has invested in private equity.
The Shell fund is the latest big investor to give a vote of confidence to the hedge-fund industry, which went through the worst period in its history during the financial crisis last year. Last week, alternative-assets consultancy Preqin published a survey of 50 pension funds, insurers, family offices and other investors, and found that 73% of them said their hedge-fund portfolios had either met or exceeded return expectations, up from 62% that said so last year.
TradingMarkets.com – Asset manager Gottex Fund Management Holdings Ltd. (GFMN.EB) said Thursday it has been awarded an investment and advisory mandate by Nestle Capital Advisers S.A.
The investment management mandate applies to one of Nestle Pension Funds’ hedge fund portfolios; it will be managed through a customized fund of funds program, focused on relative value and event driven strategies.
West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – I recently conducted an interview with Colleen Sorrentino, CIO, and Charles M. Wright, CFA, of FoHF’s Advanced Strategies II, LP (AS II) as part of a manager interview to be featured on our HedgeCo.net Manager Database. I thought to publish some excerpts in advance.
On the topic of the FoHF’s positive 5 year track record, Wright said, "Our goal is to achieve 75 to 80% in the bull market and we have met that through the history of the fund, beating the S&P 500 about 8.54% last year. Our 5 year track record Feb 2004-2009 beat the S&P 500 by 35%."
As a multi-strategy fund with $36 million under management, a 1.50% management fee and a minimum initial investment of $250,000, AS II recently celebrated its 5 year track record this February.
"We are not afraid of volatility and our edge is in our long-short policy, we don’t use leverage as much as other funds." Sorrentino said, "AS II is a great fit for family offices, institution investors, foundations and high net worth individuals."
"Our strategy is combination of art and science," Sorrentino continued, "We put a lot of time into into our managers and their selection in order to generate maximum return. We are not a hot fund, moving from manager to manager, we do complete background checks at the start, following up with a focus on due diligence, meeting on site on an annual basis as well as with independent advisers."
AS II stays away from over-leveraged funds, with no leverage at the fund level. "We do not place money with hedge funds that invest a substantial portion of their assets in esoteric investments such as derivatives, structured investment vehicles, CDOs, or managers that utilize black box quantitative models. We have been managing funds of hedge fund portfolios since 1992. The Firm’s partners and employees maintain a substantial stake in AS II." the FoHF’s website states.
AS II’s parent company, Wall Street Access Advanced Strategies LLC (WSAAS), has been managing fund of hedge funds portfolios for over 15 years. WSAAS is also an affiliate of Wall Street Access, which is a New York Stock Exchange member. G&S Fund Services is Fund Administrator.

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.Net)- Man Group has agreed to pay $50 million for a 25% stake in Nephila Capital, an alternative investment manager specializing in insurance-based instruments such as insurance linked securities, catastrophe bonds, insurance swaps and weather derivatives.
The CEO of Man Group plc, Peter Clarke, said, "This transaction further develops Man’s strategy to expand the range of opportunities for our investors. The natural catastrophe and weather derivative markets offer significant opportunities for uncorrelated alternative investment returns. We are excited at the prospects of this strategic partnership and what it means for our and Nephila’s investors."
The investment, which follows Man’s purchase of 50% of credit specialist Ore Hill in March, comes as the increasingly competitive hedge fund industry hunts for sources of extra return not correlated with traditional markets.
Bermuda-based Nephila, which manages around $2.4 billion in assets and employs 25 staff, specialises in insurance-based instruments such as insurance-linked securities, catastrophe bonds, insurance swaps and weather derivatives, Man said in a statement on Friday.
Man is a world-leading alternative investment management business. With a broad range of funds for institutional and private investors globally, it is known for its performance, innovative product design and investor service. Man manages over $78 billion and employs 1,600 people in 13 countries worldwide.
