At Nadel hearing, new fund surfaces

Friday, July 10, 2009 : Permalink

Herald Tribune – At a bail hearing in which Arthur G. Nadel was sent back to his cell to come up with better co-signers, a federal judge heard from the receiver in the case about a previously unknown multimillion-dollar hedge fund account controlled by Nadel in the Cayman Islands.

Receiver Burton Wiand, a Tampa lawyer, testified that he had discovered a hedge fund in the Caymans that at one point contained $15 million. He was able to follow $5 million back to one of the six funds at Nadel’s Scoop Management in Sarasota. The whereabouts of the remaining $10 million is unclear.

Madoff scandal boon for mutual funds, DWS exec says

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 : Permalink

Reuters – The Madoff scandal could be a boon for mutual funds as investors shift into regulated asset management vehicles in Luxembourg or Ireland away from hedge funds in the Caymans, a German mutual funds executive said.

"There’ll be a drive clearly toward more transparency and stricter supervision. That could be good for mutual funds," Stephan Kunze, head of Europe at Deutsche Bank’s  mutual funds arm DWS, told Reuters in an interview.

"A lot of strategies that have been set up in the Caymans will migrate to Luxembourg or Ireland-domiciled replicas (with) hedge fund strategies migrating onto mutual fund platforms," he said, speaking on the sidelines of DWS’s annual news conference.

The Caymans have been touted in recent years as the "centre of choice" for hedge funds by Walkers, a major offshore law firm, as well as other service providers for several investor-friendly reasons.

Hedge Fund Adviser Tozai to Close After Redemptions

Tuesday, December 9, 2008 : Permalink

Bloomberg – Tozai Investment Advisory Ltd., a Tokyo-based hedge fund adviser, is closing its business after market losses and investor redemptions cut its funds’ assets to zero from a peak of $70 million, a senior partner said.

The Cayman Island-based Trident Pacific Japan Absolute Return Fund, which Tozai advises, was closed last month, Angus McKinnon, senior partner at Tozai said in an interview in Tokyo yesterday. The fund, launched in December 2004, invested in Japanese equities using a so-called long-short strategy that bets on rising and falling stock prices, McKinnon said.

Global hedge funds are bracing for the worst year on record as more than 80 firms liquidated hedge funds, segregated assets or limited withdrawals following the MSCI World Index’s 44 percent drop this year and tightening credit conditions. Citadel Investment Group LLC, the hedge-fund manager founded by Kenneth Griffin, said yesterday it will close its Tokyo office, eliminating 12 jobs.
