Journal Article Exposes Secondary Level of Research for Hedge Funds

New York (HedgeCo.net) – One man and his company work as consultants to Steven Cohen’s SAC Capital, Daniel Loeb’s Third Point LLC, Richard Perry’s Perry Capital as well as European hedge fund giant Brevan Howard Asset management, and until a recent feature article from the Wall Street Journal most people had never heard of Ari Bergmann.

While there are many consulting firms in the hedge fund industry, most of these firms specialize in marketing or compliance issues, but Bergmann and his firm, Penso Advisors LLC, they offer hedge funds trading ideas. Penso isn’t the only consulting firm that operates in such a manner, but few can claim such an impressive client list.

What these idea generators offer hedge funds is an outside voice that can help them hedge certain bets or even generate fresh ideas. What is most interesting about these types of consultants is that many times they are compensated with a portion of the gains the idea generates.

While Cohen, Loeb, and other hedge fund managers get a lot of press coverage for the moves they make in the market, Bergmann and other consulting firms fly under the radar of the press and the general investing public. This anonymity has to remove some of the pressure associated with managing money for other people and it likely allows the consultant to look at the investment idea more objectively.
