Japan July retail trust funds value hits 10-mth high

Thursday, August 13, 2009 : Permalink

Reuters – The value of Japanese retail-targeted mutual funds rose to a 10-month high of 58.8 trillion yen ($613 billion) in July, lifted by inflows into international equities funds and strength in share prices, an industry body said on Thursday.

It was the sixth straight month of increases in the value of publicly placed investment trust funds, or "toshins", as signs of a global economic recovery boost investor confidence. The value was also helped by rises in share prices, with the benchmark Nikkei share average .N225 gaining 4 percent in July.

The overall value of publicly placed investment trust funds rose by 1.7 trillion yen or 3 percent from the previous month to 58.8 trillion yen in July, the highest since September, Japan’s Investment Trusts Association said.

RAB says clients returning to some hedge funds

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 : Permalink

Reuters UK – Hedge fund firm RAB Capital said on Wednesday that clients had started putting money back into some of its funds helped by a recent upturn in performance, adding to signs the industry may be recovering.

The firm, some of whose funds have been hit by poor performance and illiquid markets during the credit crisis, posted a 32 percent drop in overall assets. However, it said it saw positive net flows into its single strategy funds in the second quarter and into July, excluding the effects of recent disposals.

Few Hedge Funds Started In Europe This Year, Raising Little

Monday, July 27, 2009 : Permalink

NASDAQ – The pace of new European hedge fund launches has stalled this year after the industry’s dismal 2008 performance made investors unwilling to back new ventures.

Data provider EuroHedge Monday said just 47 funds started trading in the first six months of the year, the least in a decade and less than half the number in the same period of 2008. The new funds collectively raised $2.09 billion – a figure that in "normal" times might have been raised by one fund alone.

However, EuroHedge said there are signs the second half could be more fruitful, with several high-profile funds already started or in the pipeline. Those include Theleme, a global equities strategy being set up by Patrick Degorce, a co-founder of The Children’s Investment Fund who left to strike out on his own, and Gyldmark Liquid Macro Fund, a fund started by former BlueCrest Capital portfolio managers.

Euro Weakens as Trichet Fails to Assuage Concern ECB Is Split

Bloomberg – The euro fell to a one-month low against the dollar after European Central Bank President Jean- Claude Trichet’s pledge to boost confidence failed to assuage concern the bank’s policy makers are split. The Dollar Index rose for a fourth day before a report that may show consumer confidence in the U.S. increased for a second month, underpinning signs its recession may be easing.

Connecticut’s “Rodeo Drive” Abandoned as Hedge Funds Collapse

Monday, March 23, 2009 : Permalink

Bloomberg – Finding a parking spot for your Mercedes or BMW on Greenwich Avenue, the main shopping strip of the U.S. hedge-fund capital, used to be a challenge. Not anymore.

With the recession hammering retail sales, empty curbside spaces abound along the suburban Connecticut thoroughfare, known as the Rodeo Drive of the northeast, and “For Rent” signs decorate vacant storefronts. Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Borders have all closed their Greenwich Avenue locations.

As banks and hedge funds cut jobs or close down in the worst financial crisis since the 1930s, Greenwich merchants are suffering sales declines. Some stores are simply packing it in. Many are renegotiating rents, cutting inventory or offering cheaper products.

Give backs and free management from some hedge funds

Wednesday, January 7, 2009 : Permalink

BloggingStocks – Over the past few weeks you probably saw signs in retail stores touting "big sales" with discounts of 50% to 70& off. It seems that Wall Street has caught on to main street’s way of doing business – discounts, discounts, discounts!

The Renaissance Technologies LLC, a large hedge fund, has waived all of its management fees for 2009. Originally it charged a 1% fixed management fee, but with the new policy it will take a $30 million dollar haircut. However, the other larger Simon’s Renaissance Institutional Equities Fund will not cut its management fee in 2009. Other funds are using similar practices. The Citadel Investment Group LLC gave back about $300 million dollars in fees it collected in 2008.

Renaissance, like many other hedge funds, suffered losses in 2008 ranging from 12% to 16% but managed to beat the S & P losses by 4-6%.

Investors Dip Their Toes Back Into Stocks

Tuesday, December 23, 2008 : Permalink

Wall Street & Technology – Global investors boosted their equity holdings for the second month running in December and cut bonds, thanks to signs of stabilising stock markets and tumbling government bond yields, Reuters polls showed on Monday.

Surveys of 44 leading investment houses in the United States, Japan, continental Europe and Britain showed an average mixed-asset portfolio holding 56.0 percent in stocks, up from 54.8 percent in November. However, it still remained below the long-term average holding of almost 60 percent.

Bond holdings fell to 33.0 percent in December from 34.3 percent the previous month, above the long-term average of around 32 percent.

Cash rose to 5.4 percent from 5.3 percent.

A rise in the respondents’ equity holdings comes as world stocks, measured by MSCI, rose nearly 20 percent after hitting a 5-1/2 year low on November 21.

A round of central bank interest rate cuts worldwide and the introduction of fiscal stimulus packages in major developed and emerging economies have helped convince many investors that stock markets might bottom before long.
