Selector hails rise of Ucits III hedge funds

Citywire.co.uk – Fund selector Christian Lundström, from Independent Investment Group in Sweden, is welcoming the evolution of the Ucits III space which is seeing more and more hedge fund groups entering the area.

Last week, HSBC Asset Management’s Farley Thomas warned on the trend of hedge fund groups launching Ucits-compliant funds, saying ‘Ucits is about trust, so retail fund firms in Europe should be protective of Ucits. Will the hedge fund firms be there to hold retail investors’ hands when things go wrong?’

While there may be fears for retail investors accessing such funds, many selectors are greeting the changes with open arms. Lundström is excited by the opportunity to access strategies which can ‘generate portfolio returns with low or even negative correlation to equities and commodities.’

Switzerland Investigates Santander

Wealth Bulletin – Geneva’s public prosecutor said he has launched a criminal investigation into allegations that Banco Santander SA’s hedge-fund unit misled investors when it funneled their money into Bernard L. Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

The formal investigation was opened following a complaint by Geneva Partners, an independent investment fund that bought financial products from Santander’s Geneva-based hedge-fund unit, Optimal Investment Services SA.

Dario Zanni, Geneva’s public prosecutor, said the inquiry would look at whether Optimal’s former chief executive, Manuel Echeverria, did the fact-finding claimed in the firm’s documents. "We have some suspicion about his [work]," Mr. Zanni said. "We are not sure he was doing his job compliant with his duties."

Abbott Capital Management closes $1bn private equity fund of funds

AltAssets – Abbott Capital Management, a US-based independent investment manager, announced today that it has met its target for the Abbott Capital Private Equity Fund VI, having raised over $1bn.

Like Abbott’s previous funds, the investment strategy for ACE VI is to invest in a range of venture capital and growth equity, buy-out and special situations funds within the US and other developed markets.
