Dow Jones Hedge Fund Strategy Benchmark Review

Monday, December 15, 2008 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) - In the monthly report from Dow Jones Indexes on the performance of Hedge Fund Strategy Benchmarks, only one of four strategies, merger arbitrage, posted net-of-fee gains in November.

After hedge funds experienced two of the most volatile months in market history, merger arbitrage emerged with a small positive net-of-fee gain in November, returning 0.15%. The small gain held YTD performance for merger arbitrage at approximately the same level as last month, down about -9%.

Convertible arbitrage was hit the hardest with a loss of -4.80%, followed by event driven and distressed securities, which were down -6.35% and -7.47%, respectively, for November.

The equity market neutral and equity long/short benchmarks were suspended at the start of the month as a result of the temporary risk mitigation measures taken by the investment manager of the managed account platform that supports the Dow Jones Hedge Fund Strategy Benchmarks. It has not been determined when calculation of these benchmarks will resume.

On a float-adjusted basis, the Dow Jones Wilshire 5000, the only broad measure of the domestic equity market, lost -8% (-8.15% on a full-cap basis) in November decreasing its YTD return to -38.30% (-38.37% on a full-cap basis).

The fixed income asset class, as measured by the Dow Jones Corporate Bond Index was up 4.88% this month and its cumulative return is down -5.99% for the year. Finally, the Dow Jones Wilshire Global Index, the broadest measure of global equity market, lost -6.73% for the month decreasing its YTD return to -44.68% for 2008.

November 2008 figures for the Dow Jones Hedge Fund Strategy Benchmarks are based on daily estimates net of fees.

BOE’s Gieve Says Markets Still `Under Acute Strain’

Tuesday, October 28, 2008 : Permalink

Bloomberg – Bank of England Deputy Governor John Gieve said investors are still facing “acute” stress as market declines force hedge funds to sell assets.

“The financial system remains under acute strain,” Gieve said in a speech in London today. “The falls in equity markets, corporate bond prices and the prices for leveraged loans is hitting both long-term institutional investors and leveraged investors, including hedge funds.”

The Bank of England said in a semi-annual report that $2.8 trillion in banking losses and the threat of a global recession are increasing risks to financial stability. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gordon Brown yesterday suggested he may scrap decade- old fiscal rules to prop up the banking system as the nation faces its first recession since 1991.

Investment losses at hedge funds and insurers pose further risks to the system, the central bank’s report said, as insurers may fall short of capital requirements and face credit rating downgrades, while hedge funds may be forced to sell assets.

Mooring Hedge Fund Gains Amid Losses

Thursday, October 2, 2008 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Mooring Financial Corp., a private investment firm specializing in the management of alternative assets, has seen its hedge fund, the Mooring Intrepid Opportunity Fund gain 37% year-to-date, while global hedge fund returns have declined almost 10% this year.

The fund gained by capitalizing on corrections in the high-yield corporate bond, commercial mortgage-backed securities and subprime residential mortgage markets. The Fund has gained 132.1% since its inception on March 1, 2007, the Fund’s highest gain on investment to date.

"The centerpiece of our objective for Mooring Intrepid Opportunity Fund is the expectation of a repricing of risk in the credit markets," said president and founder John Jacquemin, "We mapped out a strategy two years ago in anticipation of the credit markets debacle now taking place. The fund’s positions are volatile and aggressive, and appropriate only for investors who understand these risks."

In recent weeks, the fund has begun to take additional bearish positions in financial and commercial real estate stocks as well as exchange traded funds in anticipation of continued deterioration within these markets.

"We believed strongly that the credit markets had reached a point of excess never before experienced in modern history." Jacqumin explained, "and we felt strongly that the risk/reward ratio was very much in our favor. This has proven to be the case."

The firm has acquired and managed more than $2 billion of financial assets since inception in 1982. Mooring Financial Corporation manages four funds across different asset classes, including distressed commercial loans, real estate tax liens, publicly traded equities and credit derivatives.
