Cerberus to ban withdrawals from 2 funds

Reuters – Cerberus Capital Management CBS.UL said on Wednesday it will prohibit investors in new hedge funds from withdrawing money for three years.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Financial Times reported Cerberus planned to bar withdrawals in two new funds to prevent the outflows that followed its loss-making acquisitions of carmaker Chrysler and financial services company GMAC.

“The three-year lock-up period will apply to all new hedge funds,” Timothy Price, managing director and spokesman for Cerberus, said in a statement to Reuters.

Investors eye top startups as IPO market awakens

Reuters – Investors, encouraged by a growing number of acquisitions and public floats in the past few months, are keeping a close eye on a coterie of promising startups in Silicon Valley.

An informal poll of venture capitalists and others pointed to six privately held companies as the ripest for acquisition or readiness to go public, out of 34 cited in industries ranging from alternative energy to social networking.

For now, the Silicon Valley Six say they intend to keep growing rather than agreeing to be acquired or go public during the recession.

Blackstone, Fortress Seek Hedge-Fund Takeovers After Debt Slump

Bloomberg – Blackstone Group LP and Fortress Investment Group LLC are seeking to take over credit funds from managers unable to support their businesses after the value of investments fell.

There are “a lot of companies that are on the block,” Tony James, Blackstone’s president, said on a conference call yesterday with investors. New York-based Blackstone, the world’s biggest private-equity company, is “looking hard at consolidating acquisitions,” he said.

Facebook’s Thiel Explains Failed Twitter Takeover

INDYchannel.com – Facebook remains on the lookout for acquisitions after its failed attempt to buy microblogging site Twitter, one of the company’s directors and largest investors says. "We’re still focusing on growing as much as possible," says Peter Thiel in an interview with BusinessWeek.

In Facebook’s first public confirmation of the talks, Thiel said the parties disagreed over price and structure when they seriously considered a deal last fall. "It became pretty clear it wasn’t going to happen," Thiel says from the mid-Manhattan office of his hedge fund Clarium Capital. "The deal would have to be done with Facebook stock. And then you have to figure out how much the stock is worth."
