Multi-Strategy Funds Win Big At The Hedge Funds Review Americas Awards 2014

New York (HedgeCo.Net) – Hedge Funds Review and partner BarclayHedge have announced the winners of this years “Hedge Funds Review Americas Awards 2014.”

Multi-strategy hedge funds were the big winners at the Hedge Funds Review Americas Awards, with Whitebox Advisors named ‘Best overall hedge fund group’ and Millennium Management winning ‘Hedge fund of the year’.

Millennium also picked up awards for ‘Best multi-strategy hedge fund’ and ‘Best non-directional hedge fund over 10 years’.

The Whitebox Credit Arbitrage fund was named ‘Best arbitrage hedge fund’. Other winners included: Glenview Capital Management, which won ‘Best long/short equity hedge fund’; P. Schoenfeld Asset Management, for ‘Best event driven hedge fund’; and Deer Park Road Corporation, which snagged the ‘Best fixed income/credit hedge fund’ award.

Element Capital Management won ‘Best global macro hedge fund’ and Venor Capital Management was named ‘Best distressed hedge fund’.

Morgan Stanley Alternative Investment Partners was the big winner in the fund-of-hedge-funds categories, winning ‘Best overall fund of hedge funds group’, ‘Best bespoke fund of hedge funds provider’ and ‘Best diversified fund of hedge funds over three years’.

Lighthouse Investment Partners won the awards for the ‘Fund of hedge funds of the year’ and the ‘Best diversified fund of hedge funds over one year’.

The members of the panel were: Lionel Erdely, head of hedge funds at Investcorp; Frank Frecentese, global head of hedge fund research at Lyxor Asset Management; Deepak Gurnani, founder of ARP Investments; Hiroshi Harada, managing director at Lighthouse Investment Partners; Samantha Levenstein, portfolio adviser at Aksia; and Stefan Zellmer, chief investment officer of Burnham Alternative Investments.

Stuart Macdonald, managing director at Aquila Capital, and Tushar Patel, managing director at HFIM, provided their insight in judging the funds-of-hedge-funds awards.

The judging panel considers the results of the quantitative analysis and selects a winner in each category. In selecting the winning fund, the judges take into account the quantitative analysis as well as their qualitative experience and expertise.

The awards, announced at a cocktail reception in New York City on July 24, also highlighted outstanding new talent in the industry, with Trend Capital Management picking up ‘Best global macro emerging manager’ and Pyrrho Capital Management bagging the award for the ‘Best event driven emerging manager’. The TIG Securitised Assets Fund was named ‘Best fixed income/credit emerging manager’. Anchor Bolt Capital won ‘Best equity hedge emerging manager’ and ‘Emerging manager of the year’.

The event also recognised the Harvard Management Company’s (HMC) outstanding contribution to the hedge fund industry. The award reflects the success of HMC’s approach to investing in hedge funds, which has served as a model for many other institutional investors.

Bill Michaelcheck, founder and co-chief investment officer of Mariner Investment Group, received an award for his ‘Lifetime achievement in the hedge fund industry’. An ace fixed-income trader turned hedge fund manager, Michaelcheck built Mariner into one of the industry’s most respected firms and has been a mentor to many up-and-coming traders.
