Hedge Funds Lag In October; Short Covering Seen Fueling Markets

Barrons – Hedge funds generated gains of 2.5% in October, their best month of the year so far, says the Hennessee Group. That was still less than the 10.8% advance by the S&P 500.

But it was also less than the typical stock mutual fund made in the month, which was estimated by Morningstar at slightly less than 12%. Hedge funds have lost nearly 3% in 2011, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 was down less than 1% for the year through last month, according to Hennessee.
