WEST PALM BEACH, FL (HEDGECO.NET) – Pension Schemes in the UK are traditionally more conservative than their US counterparts. However, a new study says that increasing numbers of the UK PensionSchemes investing in Hedge fund strategies have been growing over the years. Last year, according to published reports, about 1% of pension schemes in the UK are invested in Hedge fund strategies,however, about 50% of trustees said they are considering hedge fund investments.
There are significant numbers of UK Pension Schemes opting for hedge fund investments; currently about 20 of these schemes are invested in hedge funds, and another 30 schemes are interested in hedge fund products. Among the largest of the UK schemes already invested in hedge funds are J Sainsbury, Railways, Stagecoach, and Flintshire County Council Pension funds.
According to reports by Financial News, Sainsbury�s pension scheme, managed by Geof Pearson, has selected an unnamed fund of hedge funds, while Railways has allocated up to 5% of its funds to a low-risk strategy. Stagecoach has invested about 7.5% of its funds with an International Hedge fund Asset Management firm.
In the United States the percentage of pension schemes investing in hedge funds has grown dramatically, up to about 20% within the past several years. According to Mike Clowes, editorial director of Pensions & Invest-ments newspaper, about 45 of the top 200 US pension funds invest in hedge funds, up from about 25 one year ago, Clowes said, “There’s been a lot of interest; everybody is looking for more alpha, over the last 12 months, it’s really come on.” he added.
