New York (HedgeCo.net) – Hedge fund maven George Soros, of Soros Fund Management, has given $1 million to California’s campaign to legalize marijuana, the Guardian reports.

“I don’t believe in standing in the way of an avalanche,” Soros told the New York Times. “The mere fact of its being on the ballot has elevated and legitimised public discourse about marijuana and marijuana policy in ways I could not have imagined a year ago.”

The California vote comes next week, which would let anyone over 21 grow and possess up to an ounce of marijuana and allow local councils to tax sales of the drug.

Soros also spent $3m on initiatives that led to the legalisation of marijuana for medical use in the 1990s.
