Richard Collins on Pierre Lagrange, straight divorce and gay marriage

Spear’s – Following the news today that Pierre Lagrange, a co-founder of hedge fund giant GLG, has left his wife for a man and may have to hand over half of his £300 million worth in the divorce settlement, questions about pre-nups, divorce settlements and civil partnerships have been raised.

Richard Collins, a divorce partner at  Charles Russell LLP, said on these subjects: “With news of the estimated £300 million Lagrange divorce breaking, the eye-watering size of 50 per cent awards and the concept of fairness come once again under the spotlight. Even though one partner may have made over £300m from his or her own efforts, it is rare that the Court will award less than 50 per cent of the capital to a spouse in a long marriage due to his or her ‘special contribution’ in generating the fortune.
