UNITED KINGDOM (HEDGECO.NET) – A growing number of UK Pension funds have shown interest in investing with hedge fund managers, according to a recent Pioneer Investments survey. According to theresults of the survey, about 16% of those pension managers included in the research said they have already invested with hedge fund managers. The overwhelming majority of the UKs pension funds, 73%,are also interested in improving their performance results through investing in hedge funds. The survey also made note the remaining pension funds are also interested in participating in hedge fundinvestments but for different reasons, for defensive purposes.
According to Nigel Meir, Pioneers head of alternative investment sales in the U.K. and Scandinavia, “Pension funds are actually being very conservative with their hedge-fund investments, which are aimed at diversifying away from the long-only market, he added, “They are enhancing performance in the sense that hedge funds outperform during a bear market.
The Pioneer study also discovered that fund of funds vehicles are the most preferred asset classes by UKs pension funds. The survey showed that an overwhelming majority of UKs pension fund managers, 86%, have invested in hedge fund instruments through fund of funds channels. The study polled 94 of the largest pension fund managers in the United Kingdom managing total assets of about US$140 billion in pension fund assets.
