With the newfangled market for derivatives about to explode on Wall Street, the bank offered the 25-year-old more than $1 million in guaranteed pay when he joined in 1998. “It was a mind-boggling sum for an associate,” said Michael Karp, a veteran recruiter who was involved in the process. “But he was the right man for the job.”
