WEST PALM BEACH, FL (HEDGECO.NET) – The increasing merger and acquisition activities in the US Capital markets since the end of accounting and corporate scandals will give rise to a new flurry ofmerger and arbitrage opportunities. This is according to Christina Suarez, manager of the Merger and Arbitrage strategy for Mellon HBV�s hedge fund.
Suarez explained that such corporate problems, which have dominated the headlines for the past two years, have ultimately left companies in a much better footing with regards to accounting and management responsibilities. Consequently, such a scenario will pave a path for an expected pick-up in the merger activities in the near term.
In addition to the new corporate governance procedures adopted by many firms, Suarez also explained that there is increased scrutiny from the government regulators. Such developments will lead to new activities in the merger and arbitrage arena.
Mellon HBV is poised to take advantage of such opportunities when it unfolds. Such deals as the purchase of AT&T by Cingular Wireless may turn out to become an attractive event for hedge fund managers specializing in merger arbitrage strategies.
Mellon HBV Alternative Strategies LLC was founded in February 1999 and subsequently acquired by Mellon Financial Corporation in June 2002.
