Equity and Commodity Bets boost Hedge Fund Returns

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (HEDGECO.NET) – French business school Edhec said in a release today that hedge funds that bet on equity and commodity prices around the world were amongst the top performers inApril. Funds of hedge funds, which invest in portfolios of hedge funds, returned 1.76 percent in April and in the first four months of this year were up 6.8 percent.

Managed futures funds, which make directional bets on stock, bond, currency and commodity markets on the basis of buy or sell signals from computer models, had returned 4.17 percent last month.

Year-to date they are up 7 percent, but that is below the 12.2 percent emerging market hedge funds have returned so far this year. Emerging market funds returned 3.6 percent in April.

In an interview with Reuters earlier in the week, Edhec said, “The month of April was characterised by a fairly strong stock market performance.”  They also mentioned that the broad bond market showed a moderate decrease, driven by increasing interest rate levels … Commodity prices continued their increase.

Global macro funds also did well with returns of 2.59 percent in April and 6.2 percent for the year so far.
