Hedge Funds Rock and Raise Money For a Good Cause

SYDNEY, Australia (HedgeWorld.com) – Long Tooth Capital, The Amplifiers and Typhoon may be new on the hedge fund scene, but don’t expect them to ever show up in any hedge fund databases.

They are three rock bands made up of hedge fund industry executives, and will be performing at Sydney’s Hard Rock Cafe on Sept. 4. The fundraiser is organized around a major hedge fund conference targeting Australian pension fund investors.

Last year’s concert was sold out in days, and through an auction and other fundraising, hedge fund industry officials gathered A$100,000 (US$66,015) for cancer research. Photos of the hedge fund rockers are available on the group’s web site, www.cureourkids.com.au.

This year officials hope to double that amount. Organizers are expecting 550 plus guests to the Hedge Funds Rock event. Tickets will go on sale at the end of July at A$100 a piece and the concert is expected to be another success, according to one of the organizers Steven Howell, chief investment officer at Basis Capital Pty Ltd.

“We expect that Hedge Funds Rock 2003 will be even bigger than last year. It’s a sign of maturity for the Australian industry – and is an industry first for the global hedge fund industry,” Mr. Howell said in a statement.

Proceeds go to Cure our Kids, which is an organization that funds scientific research to find a cure for childhood cancer. The program works with the oncology unit at the Children’s Hospital Westmead. The hedge fund executives involved hope to provide consistent funding and to build a capital investment fund to provide the research unit with funds to take further studies relating to children’s cancer, in addition to upgrading existing facilities and providing children and their families with support services.

The Alternative Investment Management Association is a supporter of the Australian hedge fund industry’s philanthropic effort and also supports a second fund raising tool that is also in the planning phase: the Australian Hedge Fund Directory.

The directory includes advertising from single-strategy hedge fund managers, funds of funds and services providers in accounting, brokerage, compliance, administration and recruitment. The book includes a performance summary table of all the book’s sponsors and is distributed via industry conferences and in marketing efforts onshore and offshore. Last year, 57 companies were included in the “Australian Hedge Fund Who’s Who Directory 2002.”
