GOP colleagues glad to carry Castle

Delaware Online – The two small strokes Rep. Mike Castle suffered over the weekend will keep him out of Washington for the last hectic congressional work week before the November elections.

Congress is set to vote on a series of defense and homeland security spending bills, as well as a Castle-sponsored bill calling for closer government scrutiny of hedge funds. Castle also was bracing for a fight with the House leadership over the treatment of detainees, although most of the disputes have been settled.

Castle’s colleagues will stand in for him while he is sidelined. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., will take over as spokesman for the Republican moderates as legislation dealing with Guantanamo Bay detainees and the Geneva Conventions comes to the House floor. Rep. Mike Oxley, R-Ohio, will stand in for him when the hedge fund bill comes up for a vote.
