Dollar moves in lower-106 yen level in early Tokyo trading+

TOKYO, Feb. 19 (Kyodo) — The U.S. dollar traded in the lower half of the 106 yen level in early Tokyo trading Thursday after rising above the 107 yen line the previous day in New York for the firsttime in a month.

At 9 a.m., the dollar was quoted at 106.31-34 yen, compared with 106.70-80 yen in New York at 5 p.m. Wednesday and 105.57-60 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The euro was quoted at $1.2725-2728 and 135.31-35 yen, compared with $1.2685-2695 and 135.35-45 yen at 5 p.m. Wednesday in New York.

In New York overnight, the dollar rose to 107.15 yen at one point, entering 107 yen territory for the first time since Jan. 21, on buybacks by hedge funds, dealers said.

Also behind the dollar’s rise was suspected yen-selling market intervention by the Japanese monetary authorities, dealers said.
