CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dec. 11, 2003–Pundits have pronounced; analysts have estimated; there is no shortage of opinions: Now that the new cellular phone portability law is “live” (in theinitial 100 cities, at least), everyone wants to know whether cell phone customers are flocking to new carriers (VZ, SBC, AWE, DT, BLS, PCS, NXTL, AT).
To determine potential win/loss rates and share changes over time, Stax has been asking a representative sample of 1800 consumers per month since September 2003 about their cell phone service usage, their recent actions on choosing providers, and their future intentions (whether switching or not, and from which to which provider). We’ve been recording their responses since September to develop a baseline, and will continue interviewing 1800+ per month going forward, analyzing results to show potential win/loss rates and share changes over time. Given that many consumers have annual contracts, expiration dates will truly “release” more consumers to change carriers, which may lead to measurable shifts in market share.
Results are available via our Stax Cell Phone Portability Report, available either as a standalone “to-date report” or as an ongoing tracking study. (Statistically, previous Stax studies on relative market share changes have been strongly corroborated by actual market events.)
Continuing this research and analysis on a monthly basis means that our clients will have a consistent set of data and early indications of share changes and potential share changes, from the best source possible–the buyer.
About Stax’s Cell Phone Service report, available to buy-side and corporate customers only: Every month, Stax surveys cell phone users about their service provider, purchase behavior, and intent to switch providers (from which to which). We compare this data with publicly available information drawn from a wide range of trade publications, consumer websites, and industry experts concerning wireless service quality/coverage, customer service, customer impressions, and rankings and ratings of performance. Our results and analysis point to winners and losers, share changes, and reasons for change. With demographic data in hand, on a customized basis, we can even determine which customer segments are shifting.
