and Fiduciary Responsibilities, and Philanthropy in the 21st
Century
Russell Investment Group, a global leader in multi-manager investment services, will bring its Endowment and Foundation Symposia Series to Los Angeles on November 13, 2003. The event will address critical issues facing both trustees and staff of non-profit organizations of all types and sizes. Among the participants will be a unique mix of board members, senior investment/finance staff and senior development staff representing universities, schools, community foundations, private foundations, corporate foundations, hospitals, museums and other public charities.
“Since we are experiencing such extraordinary times in the securities markets, global economy and corporate managerial landscape, we believe it is essential that non-profit organization staff and boards interact and learn from one another, inside and outside of their respective organizations,” said Dale Kindregan, relationship manager for endowments and foundations at Russell.
The agenda for the one-day educational forum will focus on three important areas:
— Investment and spending issues
— Governance and fiduciary responsibilities
— Philanthropy in the 21st century
An outstanding roster of local endowments and foundations will participate as speakers and panelists at the Symposium. Among them are: Steven Algert, CFA Director – Absolute Return Strategies, University of California; Duane Drake, Chief Financial Officer, The San Diego Foundation; Sandra Ell, Chief Investment Officer, California Institute of Technology; John Hsuan, Manager, Alternative Investments, Pepperdine University; John Kerrigan, Chief Investment Officer, Santa Clara University; and Patrick Modugno, Chief Financial Officer, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.
In addition to local endowment and foundation speakers, there will be a session covering the philanthropic landscape and the donor of the 21st century led by Douglas K. Freeman, J.D., LL.M., Chairman and National Managing Partner, IFF Advisors, LLC; a session on audit and legal fiduciary responsibilities conducted by Lynda S. Moerschbaecher, Esq.; and a presentation on committee dynamics and investment behavior led by Arnold S. Wood, President and CEO of Martingale Asset Management-Boston.
Several senior representatives from Russell, including Kindregan, also will speak: Jeffrey Geller, Director, Investment Management and Research – Hedge Funds; John H. Ilkiw, Director, Global Consulting Practice; Richard S. Leaf, Regional Director; and Steven M. Murray, Head, Quantitative Decision Models.
Among the key topics that will be addressed are:
— Best practices in non-profit investment governance – The task
upon which a solid organization is built and how it serves as
a shield against liability.
— Building Better Model Portfolios – Exploring various asset
allocation mixes and their impact on spending policies.
— Are hedge funds right for your organization? – Understanding
the characteristics of these complicated strategies.
This is the eighth event in Russell’s Endowment and Foundation Symposia Series. Russell’s Kindgregan said the first seven events – held in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Louisville, Boston and Dallas – were extraordinarily well received. The Los Angeles event will take place on November 13 at the Century Plaza Hotel and Spa, 2025 Avenue of the Stars (in Century City). (Please note: the event is closed to the media, but follow-up interviews can be arranged).
