Bloomberg – Gennaro Pucci, formerly head of trading at credit manager Credaris, has started a $100 million hedge fund that will trade mostly European corporate debt, credit derivatives and asset-backed securities.
Christian Evans and Rachel Barnard, both formerly at UBS AG, will help manage the Matrix-PVE Global Credit Fund from London as a joint-venture with Matrix Group Ltd., Pucci said in a telephone interview. The fund will use Matrix infrastructure, operations, compliance and sales.
Rival hedge fund managers have also been raising capital to trade European debt on expectations the region’s recovery from its worst recession since World War II will create opportunities to make money. Pucci left Credaris, a London-based credit specialist asset management firm that manages more than $1 billion in credit and derivatives, in April.
Bloomberg – New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has alleged that an executive of Clinton Group Inc., which once managed $8 billion in assets, knew of kickbacks made to win $750 million in state pension-fund business in 2006.
Cuomo identifies the person only as a “Clinton executive” in documents detailing his investigation of a Clinton joint venture that won the business. In 2006, George Hall, founder of Clinton Group, was president, supervising executives in six divisions, his company Web site shows. The “Clinton executive” is Hall, 49, two people familiar with the matter said.
West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Hedge fund prime broker, Newedge, has started using a Dubai Point of Presence (POP) connection to facilitate their access to the Dubai Gold and Commodity Exchange (DGCX). The new connection has high bandwidth and is more secure than an internet-based connection, the company said.
Amaury de Villemandy, CEO of Newedge Europe and Middle East, commented on its fixed line capacity, saying, “Our investment in establishing direct connectivity to DGCX was based on the increased interest among our clients in capitalizing on the commodity and currency trading opportunities offered by the Exchange.”
Newedge is a 50/50 joint venture between Societe Generale and Calyon. With a presence in 25 locations in 17 countries, Newedge primarily serves institutional clients, providing access to more than 85 exchanges.

Reuters – Amiri Capital, the Islamic asset manager backed by investment firm Olivant, said on Monday it has teamed up with broker Newedge to launch the first Islamic fund of long/short hedge funds marketed in the Middle East.
The partnership with Newedge — itself a joint venture between Calyon and Societe Generale — allows Amiri to launch the fund, which was put on hold when original partner Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy protection in September.
Hedge funds are a relatively new concept in Islamic finance and a bone of contention, with some scholars rejecting them as speculative and others sanctioning them as a tool for diversification.
Reuters – Dow Chemical is scrambling to keep its $15 billion takeover of rival Rohm & Haas alive after a surprise decision by the Kuwaiti government to scrap a joint venture with Dow, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.
The Kuwaiti decision deprived the U.S. group of about $9 billion in planned financing which it would have used for the Rohm deal, but unidentified people close to the situation told the FT that Dow could still tap a $13 billion bridge loan to pay for the takeover.
The sources also said Dow was likely to try to renegotiate the price of the deal to reflect the recent drop in Rohm’s share price, the newspaper said, adding that both Dow and Rohm declined to comment.
Midland, Michigan-based Dow agreed in July to buy Rohm & Haas for $78 a share to broaden its specialty product offerings. The deal carries a termination fee of $750 million payable to Rohm & Haas.
Proactive Investors Australia – Why have investors been selling UK-listed coal miners – even the big boys like Xstrata, Rio and BHP Billiton – as if they were going out of fashion?
Lack of understanding of the global market for the black stuff is probably the key reason. Gloom and doom has hit the commodity markets in the last three months, culminating in almost catastrophic price falls in some metals over the last 2-3 weeks. Steelmakers are cutting output. Car manufacturers are suffering from slumping sales. Nickel mines are closing and PGM miners are losing money hand over fist as metal prices have been driven down and down and down to ridiculous levels…even gold, that safe haven in times of trouble, is some 30% down from the $1000+ level hit earlier this year.
But coal’s different, surely? Falling steel output does not immediately bring about a slump in the demand for coking coal, and a concomitant drop in price, because most coal producers sell the majority of their product under contract, to a fixed price decided annually by negotiation with their customers. Unlike nickel or platinum or copper, there is virtually no spot market in coal, and thus no opportunity for “investors” – the polite name for the speculative hedge funds who drive today’s metal markets – to manipulate the price for their own profit. The coal producers enjoy fixed prices until at least next March, and will continue to supply contracted tonnages of coal.
