Gold Seek – Risk has quickly regained its status as a four-letter word.
No one wants to hear about it and no one wants to think about it. But those willing to take it on (pragmatically, mind you) will likely earn greater rewards than they would have at any other point in the past twenty years.
Right now, the herd is absolutely afraid of any risk at all…even good risks. My case in point is when the bond market went upside-down again yesterday. Investors were buying up the “safest” assets in the world as fast as they could.
At one point in the day, T-bills were yielding less than zero. Essentially, someone was willing to lend the government money for nothing, absolutely zero, in return.
It’s like selling dollar bills for 99 cents. It just doesn’t make any sense, but it does prove one thing; practically no one is willing to take on any risk right now. No one knows what’s going to happen next and the sidelines are a cozy, warm, and safe place to be. I can hear the beaten down hedge fund managers (that still has a job) now, “I may not get ahead, but I’m not going to fall behind either.”
West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Brotman Capital Partners LP, based in Boca Raton, Florida, has turned in the best performance Year to Date of a Market/Trend Timing Hedge Fund according to Barclays Hedge Fund Database.
Through October, 2008 the Fund is up over 14% net of fees. The fund has a $100,000 minimum investment and charges a 2% management fee and a 20% incentive fee.
According to Dr. Randy Brotman, Chairman and CEO, the fund has remained in cash since the middle of August. He states that “in our Trend Timing Fund, cash is an option, therefore a position.”
The Proprietary Trend Timing Model that Brotman Capital Management LLC employs dictates when the Fund should be long, short or in cash. “Be are comfortable to sit on the sidelines and wait for the trend-timing model to tell us when we will reenter the market, Brottman concluded.

Reuters – Britain’s new Personal Accounts scheme, a plan for savers without a company pension, is "highly unlikely" to invest in hedge funds and private equity, said the head of the authority in charge of setting up the scheme.
The investment portfolio of the Personal Accounts scheme, which is set to grow to 150 billion pounds ($279 billion) in 50 years’ time, has not been decided, although the scheme has said its default fund is likely to consist mainly of index-tracking funds.
Tim Jones, chief executive of the Personal Accounts Delivery Authority (PADA), told Reuters on the sidelines of an industry conference: "My personal view is that it highly unlikely because that’s not where our low to middle income earners are."
Hedge funds, which have been blamed for adding to current market volatility due to their role in short-selling stocks, are viewed by pension funds as a diversifier, although returns have been disappointing for many investors this year.
Jones also said the scheme is likely to offer around a dozen funds for savers to select from.
