Hedge funds find silver lining in crisis

Thursday, November 20, 2008 : Permalink

Norwalk Advocate – Crisis can create opportunity, and for the smart hedge fund operator, the downturn gripping the global investment community is a chance to build a respected reputation in the industry.

While the financial crisis has been unprecedented, so will be the opportunities for firms that have superior compliance and risk management capabilities, said Walter Zebrowski, chairman of the Regulatory Compliance Association, which co-hosted the Hedge Fund Leadership Thought Summit this week at the Stamford Marriott.

"What it’s going to take is your leadership to act as the brake pedal when people want to take risks," he said, adding that the government plans on putting regulations on the hedge fund industry. "What does this mean for us? Everyone’s going to have to step up their game in terms of risk management."

Zebrowski is also chief investment officer for Hedgemony Partners, a Manhattan-based global private equity firm.

New Zealand’s Absolute Return Managers Index Surge in October

Thursday, November 20, 2008 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – The Ernst and Young New Zealand Absolute Return index surged to its second highest level since inception in October, gaining 2.83% for the month, putting year to date performance at +15.8%, and year on year performance at +18.07%.

Profitable performance from those managers with a positive exposure to the serial correlation of market returns (what some call “trend following”), and implied volatility contributed to a substantial proportion of the month’s gain. A long-short commodities component also surprised with a positive performance, even in the face of weaker commodity markets.

New Zealand Absolute Return Association (NZARA) Chairman Anthony Limbrick, who is also Chief Investment Officer of Pure Capital, one of the contributing managers, said, “The Ernst & Young New Zealand Absolute Return Index was developed to do two things. The first was to raise both offshore and domestic awareness of the small but innovative New Zealand industry. This is an ongoing process but we are confident we are making progress. The second, to highlight the competence of New Zealand managers, continues to be reinforced by the strong performance of the index, both in outright terms, and in relative terms against our global peers”.

The Ernst and Young New Zealand Absolute Return Index is based on a concept of simple averages i.e. each of the seven constituent managers presents an “NZARA Average”, an average of the performance of all their funds or programs that are available for new money. In some cases a manager is presenting an average of several products. This collection of averages is then compiled again as a simple average to create the index. Ernst and Young compiles the index but is not a verification agent and does not guarantee the veracity of the performance numbers presented by the individual managers.

The index documentation was compiled by law firm Minter Ellison Rudd Watts.

John Paulson Buys Mortgage Bonds as Hedge Fund Losses Widen

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 : Permalink

Bloomberg – Money manager John Paulson has started buying beaten-up mortgage bonds as hedge funds stumbled for a fifth straight month.

Paulson, 52, is purchasing debt backed by home loans after generating sixfold returns last year with help from bets against subprime mortgages, investors in his funds said. Paulson’s Advantage Plus fund rose 29 percent this year through October, while the Eurekahedge Hedge Fund Index, which tracks more than 2,000 funds that invest globally, dropped about 12 percent.

“Paulson’s timing is typically very good,” said Louis Gargour, chief investment officer of LNG Capital LLP, a London- based hedge fund that invests in distressed credit markets.

Hedge Fund Manager OakRun Launches Short Term Fund

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Hedge fund Manager OakRun Capital LLC, has announced the launch of a receivables refactoring fund, the ‘Short Term Fund’.

The ‘Short Term Fund’, a Cayman Islands exempted fund, launched on October 1st and came in at 9.48% annualized in its first month. The fund’s objective is to generate above average current income with a lower overall credit risk profile and maintain a stable NAV.

With JP Morgan & Wachovia Bank as Custodian, the fund has a 1% management fee, 10% performance fee, quarterly redemptions, an initial lock-up period of 6 months and a minimum investment of $1,000,000. Shares are offered for subscription to eligible non-U.S. persons.

Managed by a board of directors responsible for the overall supervision and control, the fund has engaged OakRun Capital to perform management and administrative functions.

"We do not believe that simply managing for relative performance is satisfactory to our clients or ourselves." says Scott Rhodenizer, Founder, CEO, and Chief Investment Officer, "While we work to outperform the markets, we strive to do so without excessive risk.”

The fund will seek to achieve its objective through a process known as factoring.  In markets for debt instruments, higher relative yields generally indicate greater levels of credit risk than lower yielding instruments. However, OakRun believes that the trade receivables purchased by the fund present an opportunity to achieve higher yields with moderate risk.

Rhodenizer is former Managing Director at Deutsche Bank Securities with over 16 years of experience within the investment industry. He advised on over $2.5 billion in institutional assets at Deutsche Bank Securities in Miami, Florida and has experience in traditional and structured investments, such as fixed income securities, derivatives, global equities, and commodities.

At least 50% of the portfolio is insured by Euler American Credit Indemnity, an Allianz company and insurer of domestic and foreign accounts receivable covering US sales in excess of $150 billion annually. Euler is North America’s leading credit insurer, rated AA- by Standard & Poor’s. It is a subsidiary of Paris-based Euler incorporated in 1891 with current net assets in excess of $3.0 billion.

Strong Performance For Pure Capital In October

Thursday, November 13, 2008 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Pure Capital Limited, a quantitatively-driven hedge fund specializing in “targeted non-correlation” saw strong performance from their “Pure Bespoke” customized portfolio solutions in October – with client account performance ranging from +4% to +10% for the month.

Pure Capital’s year-to-date average performance across all products was +26% at month-end October 2008. Medium term correlation coefficients ranged from -0.15 to -0.80.

"We have a range of quantitative techniques through which we both deconstruct and analyze portfolio performance." Anthony Limbrick, Pure Capital’s Chief Investment Officer said, "Once portfolio performance drivers have been specified, customized portfolio solutions are built using a series of proprietary building blocks, each of which is designed to address specific types of pay-offs".

In September the Paris-based EDHEC Risk and Asset Management Research Centre published a report on overlay hedging in fund of funds. The report, authored by David E. Kuenzi, Remy Chaudhuri and Zhihui Dong of Glenwood Capital investments concluded that “a hedging capability removes a significant constraint from FoFs” and “should have the net result of improving alpha, allowing for more unique and idiosyncratic portfolios, and for more creative structured products”.

Limbrick highlighted the benefits to a European fund of fund of implementing a Pure Bespoke solution – “if one were to use the Eurekahedge European fund of funds index as a fund of fund proxy, our Pure European BetaMatch program could have reduced fund of fund losses from almost 19% year-to-date to less than 1%. Not only would performance have been improved, but there would have also been more cash available for redemption needs. We also give our clients the choice of upside beta exposure if they require it”.

In response to a question regarding the type of client exposures hedged by the Pure Capital, Limbrick said the Pure Bespoke portfolio solutions typically address “pervasive equity beta exposures or potential gap risk issues but we do look forward to widening the approach to address a range of more exotic or dynamic exposures”.

Wednesday, November 5, 2008 : Permalink

Moore Hires Greg Coffey as European Co-Chief Investment Officer

Monday, November 3, 2008 : Permalink

Bloomberg – Moore Capital Management LLC, founded by Louis Bacon almost two decades ago, tapped Greg Coffey, former GLG Partners Inc.’s top-performing money manager, to be co-chief investment officer of Moore’s European business.

Coffey, 37, will join London-based Moore Europe Capital Management LLP with a 12-person team. Eric Dannheim, a senior member of that team will become chief operating officer of Moore Europe.

“Greg Coffey is one of the most impressive trading professionals operating anywhere in the world today,” said Bacon in a statement announcing the hires. “I have known Greg for a number of years and we have similar views with respect to markets and investment decisions,” he said.

Bacon, 52, has been the sole chief investment officer for the New York-based firm since he started it in 1990. Emissions Fund Pure Capital Peforms Well

Friday, October 31, 2008 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – In this time of extreme market moves and poor investment performance, specialist investment manager, Pure Capital, a “targeted non-correlation manager” has been performing nicely, according to sources.

“The bespoke portfolio solutions we have developed for our customers over the last 24 months have been bearing fruit” says founder and Chief Investment Officer Anthony Limbrick. Pure Capital targets European, Asian and Australasian fund of funds and institutional investors, giving clients full position level transparency and daily reporting.

Pure Capital is a quantitatively-driven investment management firm providing low or negatively correlated return profiles for discrete geographical or asset-class benchmarks. However the negative correlation is not at the expense of positive returns through the economic cyble, according to the investment manager.

Pure Capital has a research and advisory subsidiary, Pure Carbon Limited. The research team for the Pure Carbon Trading model comprises Anthony Limbrick (Chief Investment Officer), Daniel Butler, emissions trading expertise, Dr Siva Naguleswaran (Head of Research) and Hamish Limbrick, software developer.

Pure Capital is looking for strategic partners with which to launch their Pure Carbon strategy as both an alternative investment product, and an emission credit risk management solution.

The primary objective of the strategy is to provide positive access to both the upper and lower tails of carbon price distributions – and as part of a carbon portfolio – to both smooth, and increase an emission credit portfolio’s investment returns. The model is approximately 50% more short the market (than long the market) from a dynamic positioning stance.

Pure Capital has two business lines. The first, Pure Non-Correlation is a range of “off the shelf” negatively correlated returns-based products targeting specific geographical or asset class benchmarks e.g. Pure Energy, Pure Carbon. Pure Capital’s flagship Japan strategy has a greater then 2 year track record of 14% annualized -  with a correlation co-efficient of -0.19 against Japanese equity index beta. Pure Capital’s product offerings are +25% year-to-date on average.

Pure Capital’s second business line is Pure Bespoke – customized negatively-correlated portfolio solutions addressing portfolio problems such as pervasive beta and gap risk. It is these products that are helping Pure Capital’s clients weather the current financial storm.

The fund performs best during strongly trending emissions prices and does not use leverage. The target rate of return is 15% per annum with a capacity to hold AUM to $50 mln, with the possibility of up to $1 bln if emissions markets continue to grow as anticipated.

Pure Capital is looking for partnerships with businesses that are already established in the distribution of emissions products and investors looking for access to alternative return profiles in a new asset class.

The core Pure Capital team has been together since April 2005. Limbrick is also a Director and Member of the Investment Committee of 36 South Investment Managers, a volatility and tail risk manager, and Chairman of the New Zealand Absolute Return Association. He has been working with Dr Siva Naguleswaran since May 1999.

Komodo Hedge Fund Outperforms as Cameron Replicates Japan Bets

Thursday, October 23, 2008 : Permalink

Bloomberg – Komodo Capital Management Pte’s hedge fund outperformed rivals as Chief Investment Officer Angus Cameron employed strategies he developed during Japan’s slump in the 1990s to profit from the global financial turmoil.

The Singapore-based firm’s KC Asia Fund has gained 8.3 percent this year, Cameron said yesterday. Other macro hedge funds, which seek to profit from broad economic trends by trading currencies, bonds and stocks in the region, lost an average of 6.7 percent in the first nine months of the year, according to Eurekahedge, a Singapore-based data provider.

“We traded through Japan during the 1990s,” Cameron, 37, said in an interview. “The strategies that worked then will work now.”

Government bonds “should do well in most markets” as policy makers shift their focus to supporting growth from fighting inflation, Cameron said. Central banks from Australia to South Korea have joined a global effort to cut interest rates, following the year-long credit-market seizure that has toppled some of Wall Street’s biggest investment banks, including Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.
