People Moves: Hedge Fund Hires 2 Asia Veterans

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 : Permalink

HedgeCo.net (West Palm Beach) – Hedge fund manager OakRun Capital announced the appointment of Mark Potter and Brian Long, both experienced Asia investment executives. The expansion is to build strategic relationships with local institutional investors and provide access to its hedge funds and investment products, including the new OakRun Short Term Income Fund.

Potter, an experienced investment executive based in Singapore, joins the firm as Director of Asia Institutional Marketing and Distribution. Long, a senior level investment professional based in Singapore, has been named Director of Asia Institutional Relations.

The OakRun Short Term Income Fund charges a 1% management fee and a 10% incentive fee with a $1MM minimum investment requirement, it returned 0.73% (9.26% Annual Yield) for June 2009 and paid out its third quarterly dividend.

“Asia is a natural market for OakRun Capital," Potter explained, "Together, the team has extensive experience in the region, speaks several local languages and has built very strong personal and institutional relationships."

"The flagship Short-Term Income Fund has received incredible initial feedback from institutions. There are very few products or funds, if any, like the OakRun Short Term Income fund that can provide investors with high credit quality, superior performance, and stable income distributions. The fund is invested in highly liquid instruments with substantially higher yields than comparable investments with duration of less than 45 days,” Portfolio Manager, Arturo Neto, CFA, said.

Mizuho Said to Hire Ex-Lehman Electronic Trading Team

Monday, November 10, 2008 : Permalink

Bloomberg – Mizuho Financial Group Inc., Japan’s second-largest bank by revenue, will start electronic trading in Asia after hiring a team of 16 former Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. employees, two executives familiar with the plan said.

The team, led by Anthony Brooker, the former head of electronic trading sales for Lehman in Asia, will target hedge funds and institutional investors with electronic products and systems for equities trading, the executives said. They declined to be identified as the plan isn’t public.

Mizuho, which cut its full-year profit forecast 55 percent on Oct. 31 because of rising bad loans and investment losses, is building its equity trading business in Asia to challenge Nomura Holdings Inc. Brooker was among hundreds of Lehman employees who opted to join competitors rather than staying with Nomura after the firm agreed to buy Lehman operations in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Nomura is taking over about 8,000 Lehman workers following the Wall Street firm’s collapse in September.

Launch, Market Access to Brazil by UBS

Friday, August 1, 2008 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.Net) – The global Equities business of UBS announced the launch of Direct Market Access (DMA) for international clients to trade securities on the Bovespa stock exchange in Brazil. UBS is among the first broker-dealers to offer non-Brazilian clients direct electronic equities trading and execution in this major market.

Recent market regulation enacted in Brazil allows for non-domestic investors access to direct electronic trading on Bovespa (Bolsa de Valores de Sao Paulo), a Sao Paulo-based stock exchange. Bovespa is the second-largest stock exchange in the Americas, and the third largest in the world.

"We have a longstanding commitment to providing clients with seamless, direct, electronic access to the major markets all over the world." Mario Campos, Head of Latin America Sales & Trading, said, "We are pleased to be one of the first brokers to offer global clients with DMA in Brazil."

"International DMA is one milestone in providing advanced electronic trading in this market – other tools and strategies will follow very soon," said Will Sterling, Head of Institutional Electronic Trading. "Making DMA available for clients trading into Brazil is particularly exciting, given our global buy-side clients’ increasing focus on this region."

With offices in 50 countries, UBS is present in all major financial centers worldwide. Its shares are listed on the Swiss Stock Exchange (SWX), the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE).
