Hedge Fund Industry Assets Surge – HFR

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 : Permalink

HedgeCo.net (West Palm Beach) – Assets invested in the hedge fund industry increased by $100 billion in the second quarter of 2009, ending at $1.43 trillion, according to figures released by Hedge Fund Research (HFR). This is the first quarterly increase in assets since 2Q 08, when total industry capital peaked at $1.93 trillion.

The strong performance was led by strategies focusing on Emerging Markets, Convertible Arbitrage and Energy/Basic Materials. These three areas were among the weakest performers in 2008, showing the dramatic shift in market dynamics that has taken place this year.

Investors redeemed $42.8 billion from hedge funds in the second quarter, approximately 60% less than the $103 billion that was redeemed in 1Q 09 and an even more significant drop from the $152 billion that was withdrawn in 4Q 08.

Funds of Hedge Funds continued to experience a higher percentage of capital redemptions than single-manager strategies, as investors withdrew $33 billion from Funds of Hedge Funds in the second quarter. Total capital invested in hedge funds via Funds of Hedge Funds currently stands at $530 billion, 37 percent of the industry’s total capital and well below the $825 billion which were invested through Funds of Funds at their peak level in mid-2008.

HFR also reports that the number of hedge funds, including both single-manager and funds of funds, remained approximately flat during the quarter at just over 8,900. The performance of the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite is now available hedged into four foreign currencies, including Euro, British Pound Sterling, Swiss Franc and Japanese Yen.

"Reflecting the diverse drivers of hedge fund industry performance, recent gains have occurred in an environment in which developed equity markets have been essentially flat", Kenneth J. Heinz, President of Hedge Fund Research Inc, said. "Improved liquidity in credit markets contributed to narrowing some of the pricing dislocations that were created near the end of 2008, and the combination of improved credit markets, gains in emerging markets, and decreased risk aversion have driven broad-based gains in 2009."

1H 2009 Hedge Fund Update: Halfway There – Report

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 : Permalink

HedgeCo.net (West Palm Beach) – Six months after their worst drawdown on record, hedge funds appear to be demonstrating stronger performance than in some previous recovery periods, such as during the Asian Currency Crisis and the Tech Bubble Burst events.

On average, it has taken hedge funds 13 months to recover from these market disruptions accordind to research peice by Credit Suisse Tremont Index LLC, the research reviews of how hedge funds have repositioned themselves in the first half of 2009 to generate positive returns for five out of the first six months of the year.

The report discusses how hedge funds, as measured by the Credit Suisse/Tremont Hedge Fund Index (“Broad Index”), have generated year-to-date returns of 7.2% through June 30, outperforming, with lower volatility, both key equity and bond indices. Some key takeaways from the report include:

The Convertible Arbitrage, Emerging Markets, and Global Macro sectors have received increased attention as investors began to regain their appetite for risk and global markets rallied.

Insight Into June Hedge Fund Performance – Credit Suisse/Tremont

Tuesday, July 21, 2009 : Permalink

HedgeCo.net (West Palm Beach) – Long/Short Equity managers who maintained a cautious stance through the recent market run-up appeared to be positioned to profit as markets shifted from cyclicals to defensives in June. Overall, the Credit Suisse/Tremont Hedge Fund Index (“Broad Index”) finished up 0.43% for June, bringing year to date to 7.18%.

Convertible Arbitrage funds continued to post the best performance of all the strategies in the Broad Index, with 4.05% for June and 23.95% cumulative performance YTD, Credit Suisse/Tremont Index’s monthly commentary reported. As equity markets’ recovered in the second quarter, managers began to profit again from the volatility arbitrage aspect of the strategy.

Overall, Emerging Markets finished the month relatively flat despite a rebound in economic activity in Asia, as countries across the region saw rising industrial and manufacturing output, the Index reported.

Credit-oriented hedge funds performed well as credit markets showed healthy activity, with $102 billion of investment grade bonds brought to the market in June. Many believe continued governments’ activism in the markets could provide additional opportunities for these managers.

Global Macro hedge funds posted their first negative monthly performance since October 2008 as the sell-off of short rates in US Treasuries negatively impacted the positions of a number of Global Macro hedge funds early in the month, Credit Suisse/Tremont said.

May Performance Up 4.06%, Credit Suisse/Tremont Hedge Fund Index Confirms

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – “Hedge funds finished up 4.06% in May, capturing the largest monthly gains since February 2000." Oliver Schupp, President of Credit Suisse Index, said, Emerging Markets funds were the strongest performers, finishing up 6.96%. The Emerging Markets sector has experienced a significant turnaround over the last three months as risk appetite seems to be returning to markets, and investors are encouraged by positive signs of global growth and rising commodities prices.” Schupp added, “Convertible Arbitrage managers also performed well during May as funds capitalized on the overall appreciation in convertible bonds globally. The Convertible Arbitrage sector has been up every month this year, and redemption pressure seems to have eased substantially as a result.”

The Credit Suisse/Tremont Hedge Fund Index (“Broad Index”) is the industry’s premier asset-weighted hedge fund index. Unlike equal-weighted indices, the Broad Index does not underweight top performers and overweight decliners to provide the most accurate representation of the hedge fund universe.

Credit Suisse/Tremont Hedge Fund Index Estimated to Finish Up 3.61% In May

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Hedge fund managers posted positive returns across all major strategies in May except for Managed Futures. Returns were driven by favorable investment conditions across equity, credit and commodities markets. India led the positive trend in Emerging Markets, with the Sensex index surging 17.3% within less than a minute of the announcement on May 18 that the Congress Party garnered a comfortable majority coalition in the general elections.

Industrial production numbers were up in many parts of Asia, with factories in Japan raising output by the largest monthly margin in nearly 60 years, and the Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) in China expanding for a third month to a seasonally adjusted 53.1 (a reading above 50 indicates an expansion). Some managers remained cautious, however, with the view that a switch from a government-led recovery to a consumer-led recovery may face hurdles such as the continuing rise of unemployment in many parts of the world, rising savings rates (particularly in the US), overhangs in vacant housing, as well as assorted weak macro data in Europe.

With spreads tightening and returns strong across the credit spectrum, relative value players such as Convertible Arbitrage and Fixed Income Arbitrage were among the best performers. With fixed income markets apparently unfazed by the General Motors bankruptcy, investment grade financials had the strongest performance, but investment grade industrials, utilities and high yield also had a solid month, as did leveraged loans.

Global Macro has continued to have the longest positive streak of all the strategies in the index for the 7th consecutive month, starting in November 2008. Managers found opportunities in currency trades, fixed income, commodities, as well as tactically trading equities. Managed Futures performance improved over April, but posted a fifth consecutive month of negative returns. Long/Short Equity Managers continued to have wide dispersions of returns, with some managers adding to their long exposures and tactically harvesting returns from the rallies, while others maintained their defensive positioning, citing an absence of fundamental drivers for a strong v-shaped recovery.

Hedge Fund Performance for April 2009

Thursday, May 21, 2009 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – In a preliminary hedge fund performance report for April 2009 and asset flows through March, Morningstar reported the largest one month-return since January 2006—bringing hedge fund returns into positive territory for 2009.

"Over the last two months, the bulls have dominated the markets, and stories of green shoots in the economy colored the financial media. The rally was led by higher-risk asset classes, including small-cap, financial sector, and emerging market stocks, as well as high-yield bonds and leveraged loans. Many hedge fund managers weren’t confident in the sustainability of the rally, and invested with a more conservative market exposure," said Nadia Papagiannis, Morningstar hedge fund analyst.

U.S. convertible bonds benefited from the trend toward higher-risk, low-credit-quality investments. According to the Merrill Lynch All U.S. Convertibles Index, these securities enjoyed their best month since 1987, with speculative-grade convertibles returning more than double the gains of investment-grade securities. The Morningstar Convertible Arbitrage Hedge Fund Index, the best-performing Morningstar hedge fund index this year, rose 5.1% in April and 12.5% year to date.

Also in the lower-quality field, the Morningstar Distressed Securities Hedge Fund Index increased 2.1% in April, the largest since the beginning of the credit crunch in mid 2007.

In emerging market equities, Eastern European countries produced the best returns in April, although this region is still recovering from its early 2009 nosedive. The only losers in April were the Morningstar Global Trend and Global Non-Trend Hedge Fund Indexes, which dropped 1.7% and 0.5% respectively.

According to Morningstar’s database, hedge funds overall continued to show a decline in outflows. In January, investors withdrew more than $29 billion from hedge funds, but February outflows totaled less than $6 billion, while March’s preliminary figure showed an even lower amount, at $3.6 billion. Despite the overall March trend of outflows, developed Asia equity hedge funds actually had net inflows of $4.1 billion in March, and investors were rewarded.

Credit Suisse/Tremont Hedge Fund Index White Paper Review

Friday, May 15, 2009 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Convertible Arbitrage: Shifting Gears (more found here at HedgeCo/blogs) discusses the strategy’s ability to generate positive returns both during the declines in equity markets in January and February, as well as during the global market rallies in March and April.

Convertible Arbitrage went from being one of the worst-performing strategies in the Credit Suisse/Tremont Hedge Fund Index (“Broad Index”) in 2008, to one of the best-performing strategies in the first quarter of this year. Many believe that the fundamental and technical reasons for convertibles’ devaluation in 2008 may correct as credit markets begin to stabilize and if deleveraging continues to abate.

‘The Undesirable Effects of Banning Short Sales’

Monday, April 20, 2009 : Permalink

Here Is The City – According to recently published data (for the United States in particular), a large majority of short sellers are market makers who are hedging their bets on the options markets. They were not affected by the ban, which means that those who were using options to take synthetic short positions continued to do so.

The others involved in short selling are mainly hedge funds. The average return over the last ten years for hedge funds that used short-sale, convertible arbitrage and long/ short strategies was 3%, 4.75% and 7% respectively. One can hardly argue that they were over-informed and that they earned abnormal returns.
