{"id":815,"date":"2003-08-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-08-20T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T04:00:00","slug":"german-government-oks-hedge-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hedgeco.net\/news\/08\/2003\/german-government-oks-hedge-funds.html","title":{"rendered":"German Government OKs Hedge Funds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The German government approved a bill Wednesday that will allow hedge funds to be sold in the country starting next year, part of an effort to boost the nation&#8217;s investment fund industry.<\/p>\n<p>  Starting Jan. 1, hedge funds will be allowed to sell shares to institutional and private investors in Germany. Investment firms currently can&#8217;t launch hedge funds in Germany, and foreign hedge  funds aren&#8217;t authorized for public distribution.<\/p>\n<p>  Hedge funds use leveraging and complex trading methods &#8211; including short selling and investing in commodities, foreign currencies or troubled companies&#8217; debt &#8211; to achieve gains no matter what the  market does.<\/p>\n<p>  Under the investment fund bill approved by the Cabinet, Germany also will give equal tax treatment to domestic and foreign funds from next year, a move that experts have said could attract up to  euro150 billion ($167 billion) to the country&#8217;s capital markets over the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>  The modernization &#8220;improves conditions for investment funds by promoting German fund companies&#8217; competitiveness&#8221; against European rivals, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>  The bill is part of a wider effort to promote financial markets.
