HedgeCo.Net (New York) – In India the investment market has shot up 141% over the last two years. Hedge funds provide an opportunity for India to attract large amounts of foreign capital. Hedge funds have led the investment flows into emerging markets. Outflows from Indian and other emerging markets is one of the first signs that these hedge funds book profits in the best performing markets, ahead of change in macro-dynamics.<\/p>\n
In an article by R. Gopalakrishnan of the Hindu businessline, he writes about the need for more hedge fund participation in India. Marti Subrahmanyam, a Charles E Merrill Professor of Finance and Economics at the Stern School of Business, New York University, held a seminar last week organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on hedge funds. <\/p>\n
During the seminar, Prof. Subrahmanyam said the negative attitude of monetary authorities and other regulators towards hedge funds arose out of the \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cfear of the unknown\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d and they needed to be educated on the role played by hedge funds, which constitute the largest market for investment banks. No doubt there were certain negatives in the case of hedge funds like easier entry and exit and \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201chuge contagion effect in emerging markets\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d which were \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cpart of the game\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d. \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cWe cannot ban electricity just because it could involve certain hazards like shocks\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d, he said. <\/p>\n
He said there was no reason why portfolio investment, including investment by hedge funds, would be withdrawn from India if the returns from the market were good. <\/p>\n
Three years back, when the Indian markets were the only markets showing robust GDP<\/span> growth, corporate results were good and improving, but P\/Es were low.
