{"id":3965,"date":"2006-02-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-02-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T04:00:00","slug":"equity-hedge-funds-beat-stocks-in-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hedgeco.net\/news\/02\/2006\/equity-hedge-funds-beat-stocks-in-january.html","title":{"rendered":"Equity hedge funds beat stocks in January"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reuters &#8211; Hedge funds which trade stocks and those that bet on financial market trends started the year with strong returns of nearly 4 percent, above the gains seen on equity markets, Frenchbusiness school Edhec said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>  Long\/short equity hedge funds, those that buy and short sell &#8212; bet on a lower price for a security in the futures &#8212; returned on average 3.93 percent in January compared with 3.16 percent for the  MSCI index of world stocks.<\/p>\n<p>  &#8220;Equity markets generally rose in January,&#8221; one hedge fund analyst said. &#8220;Hedge funds did better because they picked the right ones to be in and managed to beat the average stock market rise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>  Managed futures funds or commodity trading advisors (CTAs), which make trend bets on stocks, bonds, currencies or commodities using signals from computer trading models, returned 3.88 percent in  January.<\/p>\n<p>  &#8220;Some of that was in currencies, but most of that return was probably in commodities,&#8221; the analyst said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.borsaitaliana.reuters.it\/news\/newsArticle.aspx?type=fundsNewsUK&amp;storyID=2006-02-09T082532Z_01_NOA930295_RTRUKOC_0_HEDGE-FUNDS-EDHEC.xml&amp;archived=False\">Read CompleteArticle<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reuters &#8211; Hedge funds which trade stocks and those that bet on financial market trends started the year with strong returns of nearly 4 percent, above the gains seen on equity markets, Frenchbusiness school Edhec said on Wednesday.
