How many firms are there offering hedge fund products?

Estimates of the number of hedge funds vary, and we won't have concrete numbers unless congress decides to make SEC hedge fund registration mandatory, which some experts expect to happen in the 4th quarter of this year with the Hedge Fund Transparency Bill of 2009. I would say about 2000 to 5000 firms offer hedge funds, with my best guess being about 4000. Many of these firms are single fund firms, but some of the larger firms can offer dozens of funds.
