Hedge Fund Investors Gain Power

BusinessWeek – For years pension funds, university endowments, and other big investors essentially wrote blank checks to hedge funds and private equity firms. They readily paid stiff fees and agreed to onerous restrictions. Investors had no choice if they wanted access to the money managers and outsize gains.

All that is changing. With returns dismal and cash scarce, investors are demanding—and winning—concessions on everything from cost to oversight. "The balance of power has shifted," says a private equity executive.

In recent months some of the biggest institutional investors, including the $175 billion California Public Employees’ Retirement System, have gathered at closed-door meetings in New York and Toronto to talk about ways they might flex their newfound muscle. A number of public pensions, such as the $16 billion Utah Retirement System, have pushed firms publicly to ease terms.

Investors still flock to annual huddle

Financial Post – Investors have lost a lot of money in mining companies the past few months, but they still seem interested in finding the next big winner.

About 300 investors are expected for BMO Capital Markets’ annual global mining conference, which began yesterday in Florida and continues through Wednesday. The event, which attracts senior management from most of the world’s major mining companies, drew about 365 investors last year, so there is not much of a drop-off.

Likewise, next week’s Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada conference in Toronto is expected to draw another huge crowd.

Emerging Hedge Fund Managers Get Fee Cuts Through Philanthropy

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) -Hedge fund admin provider, Variman LLC, and Hedge Funds Care are working together offering discounted monthly service fees to emerging hedge fund managers who donate the standard set-up fee to Hedge Funds Care on behalf of Variman LLC.

Hedge Funds Care was established in 1998, Hedge Funds Care has distributed over $18 million through more than 500 grants. In 2009, annual benefits will take place in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Toronto, London and the Cayman Islands. Variman LLC is headquartered in Short Hills, NJ, USA with offices in Dubai and India.

Chairman of Hedge Funds Care to Ring the NASDAQ Closing Bell

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – President and Chairman of Hedge Funds Care (HFC), John Budzyna, will preside over the Closing Bell to mark the 11th Annual New York Open Your Heart to the Children Benefit to be held at Cipriani 42nd Street on February 11, 2009.

Hedge fund industry professionals established HFC, a charitable organisation focused on assisting young victims of abuse, in 1998. Since that time, chapters have opened in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Toronto, Cayman, and most recently in London.

The organisation comprises those companies with interests in hedge funds, including investment managers, investors, prime brokers, attorneys, accountants, administrators and information providers.
