Green Hedge Fund Directory Launched By EHFC

Monday, December 1, 2008 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – The Energy Hedge Fund Center (EHFC) announced that it has added a ‘green’ hedge fund directory to its product inventory. EHFC’s Directory of Energy Hedge Funds was launched four years ago, but with the interest in ‘green’ hedge funds, the company has created a new green directory for investors. The directory includes carbon, renewable, cleantech, forestry, water and weather derivative funds.

"We decided that now was the time for a standalone green directory and will be offering it for prepublication in January 2009," said Peter Fusaro, co-principal of the EHFC. "The market is now large enough and growing to warrant this service with over 100 green hedge funds."

"EHFC has received innumerable requests for such a product this last 12-months or so as investor appetite for environmental and alternative energy has increased," reports Dr. Gary M. Vasey, Co-Principal, EHFC. "As a result we have complied with that demand and have now added a new directory that focuses on just the ‘green’ hedge funds."

How the Bailout Is Like a Hedge Fund

Friday, October 3, 2008 : Permalink

Slate – The Wall Street bailout is alive again. In an effort to make the $700 billion bailout palatable, the architects of the law have larded it up with all sorts of goodies, such as increasing the levels of deposit insurance, sparing some taxpayers the ravages of the Alternative Minimum Tax, and extending tax breaks for alternative energy. Henry Paulson’s three-page sprig has sprouted into a 451-page Christmas tree.

What’s most interesting about the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 is just how much it reads like a prospectus for a hedge fund. In the past, hedge funds—secretive pools of capital—were open only to qualified (read: rich) investors.

But with the stroke of a pen, President Bush will soon make all American citizens investors in the world’s biggest fund—and a democratic one at that. Taxpayers won’t just be the investors. We’ll own the management company, too. Best of all? For at least a few months, we’ll have the former CEO of Goldman Sachs run our investment for a very small fee. Call it the "Universal Hedge Fund."

FINalternatives- London-based VCM Fund Management is prepping a trio of hedge funds to invest in alternative energy, macro futures and emerging hedge fund managers.

The firm next month will launch two hedge funds in partnership with K2 Capital, the alternative energy hedge fund shop founded by former Vantage Derivatives head trader Andrew Swaine. First up, the firm will offer the VCM K2 Alternative Energy Segregated Portfolio, a thematic, global equity long/short and derivatives trading strategy investing in companies positively affected by climate change with a specific focus on the energy sector. It uses a bottom-up approach to stock selection focusing on value companies in the long book, with an emphasis on large cap stocks.

“The portfolio’s large cap bias naturally creates a low volatility, which is further enhanced through protective hedging,” said the firm.
