Fueling Growth: Outsourcing Solutions for Hedge Funds

Monday, October 5, 2009 : Permalink

New York (HedgeCo.net) – A new whitepaper published by Pershing LLC, a BNY Mellon company, and Aite Group LLC examines critical hedge fund operations, entitled, Fueling Growth: Outsourcing Solutions for Hedge Funds, reports that an increase in client redemption requests is threatening the viability of even the most well-managed hedge funds.

Key findings from the whitepaper include:

* Choosing the Proper Outsourcing Model

* Smaller Hedge Funds Challenged by Resource Restrictions

* The Role of the Prime Broker

* Consider Disaster and Recovery Planning in Vendor Selection

“It is important for hedge funds to develop a thoughtful, long-term outsourcing strategy to ensure that its needs for support during various stages of the fund’s lifecycle are closely aligned with its goals and objectives to serve investors well.” Craig Messinger, managing director of Pershing Prime Services, said, “Employing this type of approach will enable hedge fund managers to focus on generating profitable returns for their clients and help them grow their businesses in a more productive manner.”

To help hedge fund managers better understand business continuity and disaster recovery planning processes and principles, Pershing Prime Services, in collaboration with Eze Castle Integration and its colleagues across BNY Mellon, has developed a guidebook entitled, Establishing Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans: A Hedge Fund Manager’s Guide.

Prime Brokerage Services Division Launch For Hedge Funds and Investment Advisers

Thursday, September 24, 2009 : Permalink

New York (HedgeCo.net) – TradeStation Securities, Inc., has launched the TradeStation Prime Services division to fill the growing need of start-up to mid-sized hedge funds, the company said today.

TradeStation Prime Services will be co-headed by Lance Baraker and William Katts, as senior managing directors, from a new TradeStation office in mid-town Manhattan, TradeStation will also now have a full membership and direct access operation on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to accommodate clients who make some of their trades on the NYSE floor.

“We believe that our award-winning trading platform technology, ability to provide custody and clearing, and the strength of our balance sheet will give us a strong offering to the small- to mid-sized hedge funds and investment advisers who need services no longer being provided by the larger firms,” said Salomon Sredni, CEO of TradeStation Group. “This is a market opportunity for TradeStation that did not really exist until recently, and we look forward to maximizing the value we believe we can create by entering this segment of the institutional trader space.”

“We are extremely excited about joining TradeStation,” added Baraker. “The downfall of many financial firms in 2008 has created a rare opportunity for another custodian to enter and succeed in the prime brokerage market. William and I look forward to combining our experience and relationships built over the years with TradeStation’s industry-leading technology to create a leading, powerful prime brokerage platform for the buy-side institutional trader.”

UBS sees hedge fund assets shrinking

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 : Permalink

Reuters – Hedge fund assets will continue to shrink this year, falling as much as two-thirds from their 2007 peak, but investors will return and assets will rebound when the economy revives, Alex Ehrlich, global head of prime services at Swiss bank UBS, said on Monday.

Last year was the hedge fund industry’s worst ever, as asset values plunged and investors pulled out record amounts of cash. These trends, which forced hundreds of funds to close their doors and some to impose redemption curbs, are likely to continue this year before the industry rebounds, Ehrlich said at the Reuters Private Equity and Hedge Funds Summit in New York.

"All this proves is that the hedge fund industry is cyclical," he said. "But the idea of the death of the hedge fund industry is crazy. The industry will rebound, though it will not rebound to peak levels."

Ehrlich, who runs one of the world’s largest prime brokerages, said that in just the past year hedge fund assets have fallen from roughly $2 trillion to as low as $1 trillion.
