Reuters – The U.S. government’s $1 billion "cash for clunkers" auto sales incentive program reached its funding limit unexpectedly after an avalanche of business exhausted its funds, an Obama administration official said late Thursday.
Auto dealers began offering government-backed rebates in early July of up to $4,500 to consumers who traded-in their gas-guzzlers for more fuel-efficient vehicles.
But the Transportation Department will need additional cash after rebates for nearly 250,000 vehicles jammed the pipeline nationwide.
NASDAQ – The pace of new European hedge fund launches has stalled this year after the industry’s dismal 2008 performance made investors unwilling to back new ventures.
Data provider EuroHedge Monday said just 47 funds started trading in the first six months of the year, the least in a decade and less than half the number in the same period of 2008. The new funds collectively raised $2.09 billion – a figure that in "normal" times might have been raised by one fund alone.
However, EuroHedge said there are signs the second half could be more fruitful, with several high-profile funds already started or in the pipeline. Those include Theleme, a global equities strategy being set up by Patrick Degorce, a co-founder of The Children’s Investment Fund who left to strike out on his own, and Gyldmark Liquid Macro Fund, a fund started by former BlueCrest Capital portfolio managers.
Reuters UK – New Horizon Capital, a Japanese private equity firm, said it may start raising its second fund this year as it sees opportunities to make money from investing in struggling companies.
New Horizon has five potential transactions in its pipeline, Chief Executive Officer Yasushi Ando said at the Reuters Private Equity and Hedge Funds Summit in Tokyo.
New Horizon is seeking commitment of 20 billion yen (142.1 million pounds) from Japanese and overseas investors for its first fund, Ando said.
Newsday – Maybe you heard the one about the phony multibillion-dollar Long Island hedge fund that was actually performing a public service.
No? Well, apparently neither did four confidence men, according to federal prosecutors.
The four were convicted yesterday in federal court in Central Islip after walking into a federal sting operation in which they thought they were about to collect $3 billion from a hedge fund. The money was to be used to build what they said was a pipeline through the Russian Republic of Buryatia, prosecutors said.
The unnamed fund was a creation of FBI agents and the Postal Inspection Service, Assistant U.S. Attorney James Miskiewicz said during the seven-day trial.
