Bloomberg – Brevan Howard Asset Management LLP, Europe’s largest hedge-fund manager, said the parent of its offshore unit may open an office in Switzerland.

“The parent company of Brevan Howard’s offshore group continually evaluates global business opportunities and is currently evaluating establishing offices in a number of jurisdictions, including Switzerland,” the company said in an e-mailed statement today.

Reuters – President Nicolas Sarkozy called at a European Union summit on Wednesday for a clamp-down on hedge funds and offshore centres as part of efforts to better regulate the world financial system.

"I would propose a simple principle, that no financial institution should escape regulation and supervision," he said according to a copy of a speech to the EU summit in Brussels.

"I am thinking, for example, of the regulation that we must apply to the rating agencies, and of the necessary supervision of hedge funds…We must also work to eliminate the grey areas that undermine our efforts at coordination, in this case the offshore centres," he said.

Caymen Net News – Law firm Ogier has captured another coveted hedge fund industry award for its leadership in the offshore investment funds arena.

The Hedge Fund Journal awarded Ogier “Offshore Law Firm of the Year 2008” by a panel who judged contenders for the award based on innovative transactions and ground-breaking work.

Ogier picked up this award for the 2007 Absolute Capital restructuring, which was the first fund restructuring of its kind to be carried out in the public eye.

Rod Sparks, Publisher of The Hedge Fund Journal, congratulated Ogier on the win, noting one of the main reasons for the panel’s choice.

“In giving our Offshore Law Firm award to Ogier we seek to acknowledge the very significant strides taken by Ogier to build out its hedge fund practice in the top offshore centres,” he said.
