Salus Alpha Directional Market Funds Outperform

Tuesday, August 18, 2009 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Salus Alpha (SA) announced that their fund, ‘The Salus Alpha Directional Markets’ stood out from its peers in the Managed Futures space due to its unique approach.

The majority of the managed futures funds, SA said, invests systematically according to computer based trading models. A computer model typically uses different indicators to identify trends on the global financial markets. These models can be characterized as long-term and short-term operating models.

Most managed futures funds use long-term trend following models; this is the reason why most of the famous managed futures funds have had significantly negative performance since the beginning of the year 2009: they didn’t recognize the trend reversal in time.

The Approach of the Salus Alpha Directional Markets Fund differs significantly from competitors – Model Risk is minimized.

"Unlike other firms we do not trust in technical analysis but we forecast futures prices with precision to identify trends. In contrast to other managed futures models the Salus Alpha Directional Markets controls risk on position, sector and portfolio level. Daily risk balancing positions the fund right in stormy weather or trend less markets." SA said.

Fund managers eye hedge fund stress tests

Friday, June 19, 2009 : Permalink

Reuters – Fund managers need to stress-test worst-case scenarios more rigorously before investing in hedge funds, industry participants at a hedge fund conference said on Thursday.

Many existing stress tests, used to gauge how funds will perform in extreme market conditions, failed to identify potential problems during the financial crisis, leaving investors exposed to steep losses.

"Many allocators used models that failed to take into consideration certain risk factors, simply because they had never been seen as risks before," Mark Schindler, portfolio manager of alternative assets at Clariden Leu, told Reuters on the sidelines of the GAIM annual industry conference.

Battered hedge funds face difficult 2009

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 : Permalink

Daily Herald – Year after year, the hedge fund industry dazzled Wall Street by delivering "absolute returns" – outsized profits whether markets rose or fell. Using sophisticated trading models, the pools of managed capital made wealthy people wealthier with eye-popping returns that carried seemingly moderate risk.

Not these days. Blind-sided by a colossal market collapse and the widening Bernard Madoff scandal, hedge funds suffered their worst showing on record last year. And they’re bracing for more pain in 2009. The industry’s fall proves that even the quantitative brilliance and market wizardry of elite hedge funds are no magic bullet for investors during brutal times.

How to run a hedge fund from your dorm room

Monday, January 12, 2009 : Permalink

North by Northwestern – By the start of his 9 a.m. class, Weinberg freshman Brian Levin has begun watching his investments.

When the markets open, he checks his models to try to predict what will happen in the markets, and then starts formulating investment positions. He calls other professionals and traders on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade to see what they’re doing that day, or if there are any rumors going around the trading community. He adjusts his investment positions throughout the day until 3 p.m. when the equity market closes.

Levin has been investing since he was 13 years old. Three years ago, he took on clients and founded the hedge fund BDL Capital Advisors, which he still runs today — when he’s not in class. Levin has over forty clients, an office in Vernon Hills, IL, and a snazzy website. Despite the current economic downturn, 2008 was BDL Capital Adviser’s best year yet financially.
