Bloomberg – Helios Capital Management Pte, the hedge-fund manager once backed by Tudor Investment Corp., plans to start a “Slumdog Millionaire” fund that will buy underperforming shares of Indian companies.
“We want to find slumdogs from the Indian equity markets who have the potential of becoming millionaires,” Samir Arora, founder of Singapore-based Helios Capital, said in an interview.
The firm plans to raise about $50 million by the end of July for its long-only Helios India Jai Ho Fund, Arora said. “Jai Ho,” which means “victory” in Hindi, is the Oscar- winning theme song from “Slumdog Millionaire,” a feel-good tale of a Mumbai orphan’s escape from poverty that scooped eight Academy Awards, including best picture, this year in Los Angeles.
Reuters UK – Hedge fund millionaire Bertrand des Pallieres’s SPQR Capital has launched a bid to trump BlueGem Water’s proposed stake building in stockbroker Panmure Gordon & Co.
SPQR said that, via vehicle P.G. Holdings, it proposed to take part in a placing of at least 43 percent of Panmure’s capital at a price of at least 28 pence per share, a minimum total spend of 17.4 million pounds.
Last month, private equity firm BlueGem Capital Partners said it would take a stake of 40 percent in Panmure at 24 pence per share.
WSWS – New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo on Monday charged J. Ezra Merkin, a multi-millionaire hedge fund manager and former chairman of GMAC Financial Services, the financial arm of General Motors, with bilking investors out of $2.4 billion by funneling their money, without their knowledge, to convicted Ponzi scheme operator Bernard Madoff.
According to the civil complaint filed by Cuomo with the New York Supreme Court, Merkin collected $470 million in management and incentive fees over a fifteen-year period by claiming to be carefully managing the money his clients invested in his three hedge funds, while funneling the bulk of the funds to Madoff’s operation.
New York Daily News – The hedge fund industry has a public relations problem these days and you have to be a millionaire to invest in one anyway, but there’s a new fund for more modest investors that can offer similar benefits.
The IQ Hedge Multi-Strategy Tracker Exchange-Traded Fund doesn’t actually invest in hedge funds, but attempts to replicate their performance.
The fund does this by holding other ETFs that own various asset classes, including stocks, bonds, currencies and commodities.
Adam Patti, CEO of IndexIQ, the company behind the new fund, said it even enjoys some advantages over hedge funds, including the ability to sell on a moment’s notice. Hedge funds typically offer limited times to sell.
Times Online – They are the financial world’s most secretive and unaccountable men — but also among its wealthiest and most influential. Today, four of the sharpest speculators in the hedge fund industry will be thrust into the spotlight when they appear before a Commons committee to defend themselves.
Christopher Hohn, the multi-millionaire founder of The Children’s Investment (TCI) fund, and Paul Marshall, the City financier who chairs Marshall Wace, will be appearing before the Treasury Select Committee hearing into the banking crisis.
They will be joined by Douglas Shaw, the head of alternatives at BlackRock, the biggest listed asset manager in America, and Stephen Zimmerman, the former Merrill Lynch executive who co-founded NewSmith Capital Partners. John McFall, the MP who chairs the committee, will be in charge of the hearing. Mr McFall, an ally of Gordon Brown, is likely to push his witnesses hard on short-selling.
Thanhnien – The PXP Vietnam Value Fund will raise as much as $200 million to invest in undervalued stocks, Snowball said.
PXP, the initials of Phan Xi Pang, Vietnam’s highest mountain, is betting that the stock market will recover as inflation eases and the nation’s trade deficit widens at a slower pace. The benchmark VNIndex may double to 750 points by the end of 2009, Snowball said.
“In the long term, the story’s intact,” Snowball, 47, said in an interview in Ho Chi Minh City. “As long as the government handles the development of the economy and the market correctly – so far they’re doing a very good job – then I think we’re fine.
