Darwin Japan Hedge Fund Returns 31% Since January on Small Caps

Bloomberg – Darwin Capital Premier LS1 Fund, a hedge fund investing in Japanese stocks, has returned 31 percent since opening to investors in January as bets on companies including JP-Holdings Inc. and Daiken Medical Co. paid off.

The fund, advised by DarWin Capital Partners Ltd., began on Jan. 20 after running under a limited partnership structure since June 2006, according to Takafumi Sahoda, founding president of Darwin Capital in Tokyo. Prior to the January start, the strategy returned 224 percent in the 27 months through October 2008 compared with a 54 percent slide in the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average in the same period, he said.

Barclays to sell iShares business to CVC Capital for $4.4 billion

Banking Business Review – The board of directors of Barclays has entered into an agreement for the sale of its iShares business to Blue Sparkle, a new limited partnership established by CVC Capital Partners, for a total consideration of approximately $4.4 billion.

Barclays has said that this transaction gives the company the opportunity to maximise value through the sale of a business which represents a channel for Barclays Global Investors (BGI); and provides Barclays the opportunity to participate in future value creation through a continuing commercial relationship with the iShares business and the potential crystallisation of consideration through a cash-settled participation interest entitling Barclays to receive a portion of the value uplift on iShares if certain performance-related hurdles are met.

PE fund sales get their own market

Reuters Blogs – It seems that private equity fund sales are heating up so much they need their own market.

SecondMarket said today it is opening trading in limited partnership interests in private equity funds, venture capital funds, hedge funds and fund of funds (the intention to launch into this market was reported a few weeks ago by our sister publication peHUB).

The firm also hired Jeffrey Bollerman, previously at Citigroup Wealth Management, to help lead its LP interest market.
