West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Due to their recent share decrease, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. has agreed to sell majority interest to asset manager Neuberger Berman. The transaction will create a new, independent investment management company to be called Neuberger Investment Management, managing approximately $160 billion of assets as of 30 November 2008.

Tehran Times – Permal Investment Management, the hedge fund investment division of U.S. asset manager Legg Mason Inc, is aiming to raise up to $500 million to take advantage of a boom in distressed sales of hedge fund holdings, the Financial Times said.
Hedge funds investors have been selling their holdings at a discount to escape restrictions on withdrawals amid a global rush for cash, according to the paper.
The new fund has been ""designed to take advantage of investors’ need for liquidity,"" Omar Kodmani head of Permal’s London office, told the paper.
""There is an unusual number of sellers out there and those who are holding funds with a one-year lock-up or even a three-month wait to the next redemption window need to get out at a discount,"" Kodmani was quoted as saying.
Reuters – Turmoil in financial markets could halve the number of hedge funds by next year, and the survivors will likely charge less for their service, an industry executive said on Monday.
Ultra-wealthy investors, who fueled a doubling in hedge-fund industry assets to about $1.9 trillion in the last three years, are now increasingly fearful about hedge-fund failures and pulling their money out, fast.
"I think people are nervous," said Robert Elliott, senior managing director at Bessemer Trust, a New York asset manager that advises clients with at least $10 million in assets.
"They have seen noteworthy blowups and don’t understand them," he told the Reuters Wealth Summit. "Hedge funds could be the next hiccup and people could say this is another example of poor regulation."
Reuters – Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc agreed on Wednesday to sell its 45 percent stake in hedge fund R3 Capital Partners for $250 million in cash and a $250 million investment in another fund managed by R3.
Lehman, which filed for bankruptcy protection last month, acquired the stake in May in return of a roughly $1 billion investment, according to document filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan.
R3 Capital is run by Richard Rieder, a former head of global principal strategies at Lehman.
Lehman owned the non-voting, minority ownership stakes in the master fund, general partner, special limited partner and management company of R3 Capital Partners, an asset manager of funds investing primarily in corporate bonds and loans.
NEW YORK – Deals involving asset managers rose in the July to September 2008 period, with the global credit crunch as the backdrop for a jump in divestitures to almost 40% of total sales, up from 23% a year earlier, according to Jefferies Putnam Lovell, the investment banking group of Jefferies & Company, Inc. focused on the asset management and financial technology industries.
Sixty-nine asset manager transactions worldwide were announced in the third quarter of 2008, 33% above the total of 52 in the July to September 2007 period, according to preliminary data from New York-based Jefferies Putnam Lovell. Total assets under management changing hands amounted to $1.0 trillion, more than three times the $300 billion total in the third quarter of 2007. Total disclosed deal value in the third quarter of 2008 increased to $6.4 billion from $6.1 billion a year earlier.
‘’As we anticipated, tremors transforming the global financial landscape have served as a catalyst to asset management deal flow,’’ said Aaron Dorr, a New York-based Managing Director at Jefferies Putnam Lovell. ‘’In the short-term, we expect more banks and other cash strapped financial institutions to retreat from owning money managers, private equity firms to step up their growing involvement in the sector, and consolidation among hedge fund companies and other alternative asset managers as firms grapple with investor redemptions and lack of liquidity. Consistent with the broader financial services industry, the asset management sector is quickly reshaping.’’ Highlights from asset management M&A activity in the third quarter of 2008 include:
• The announced sale of Lehman Brothers fund units, including Neuberger Berman, to Bain Capital and Hellman & Friedman.
• Allianz’s takeover of Cominvest as part of a swap of its Dresdner Bank unit to Commerzbank.
• Fortis’ purchase of the minority stake it didn’t already own in Artemis Asset Management.
• Lazard’s acquisition of the remaining interest in Lazard Asset Management held by the unit’s executives.
• Nippon Life’s purchase of 5% of Russell Investments.

Reuters – U.S. asset manager Putnam Investments said on Thursday that it had closed its $15 billion (8 billion pound) Prime Money Market Fund due to redemption pressures.
Putnam, a unit of Canada’s Great-West Lifeco, said in a statement that the board of trustees of its funds had voted to close the institutional money market fund as it faced "significant redemption pressure" on September 17.
"The trustees’ action was not related to the portfolio’s credit quality, but was instead a reaction to marketwide liquidity issues," the fund company said.
The Independent – Stanley Fink, the so-called godfather of UK hedge funds, has made a dramatic return to the industry after retiring from Man Group, the largest alternatives manager in the world, only two months ago.
Mr Fink confirmed yesterday that he had been appointed chief executive of International Standard Asset Management, an alternative asset manager with about £200m under management. The fund also announced the appointment of the former Labour Party fundraiser Lord Levy as chairman.
The London-based trading group said Mr Fink will assume responsibility for the operational management of the business to build a significant hedge fund presence, while both will use their extensive network of wealthy contacts to boost the fund’s assets under management.
International Standard Fund was set up by the former Merrill Lynch gold trader Roy Sher, a friend of Mr Fink, in 2003, and is mainly backed by private investors. Mr Sher said the big-name appointments should help the firm to win market mandates ahead of its hedge fund rivals.

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.Net)- Florida based hedge fund manager INTL Consilium LLC and First City Monument Bank Plc have jointly launched the Legacy Africa Alpha Fund, a $100 million hedge fund investing in Africa and the Middle East.

Reuters- U.S. asset manager BlackRock Inc gave details on Tuesday of the revised agreements it has struck with top shareholder Merrill Lynch & Co Inc that, among other things, try to protect BlackRock’s interests if Merrill’s structure changes substantially.
Merrill is BlackRock’s biggest shareholder and decided last week to retain its 49.8 percent stake in the biggest publicly traded U.S. asset manager after weighing whether to sell it in full or part to raise capital.
In a filing with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission, BlackRock said the revised Stockholder agreement has expanded the definition of change of control at Merrill Lynch to include the disposition of two-thirds or more of Merrill’s global private client business.
