J.Michael Miller To Develop Bandon’s Intermediary Market, Flagship Hedge Fund Anniversary

Monday, July 13, 2009 : Permalink

HedgeCo.net (West Palm Beach) – Alternative investment management company, Bandon Capital Management, LLC, has hired J. Michael Miller as Managing Director responsible for the development and management of the financial intermediary market.

Miller has over 25 years of experience in building, leading and managing intermediary distribution organizations and has held senior level positions with multiple national firms including Federated Investors Inc., Weiss, Peck & Greer, LLC, mPower/Morningstar and most recently was Managing Director for Concord Wealth Management.

Bandon is focused on delivering the attractive investment characteristics of alternative investing – absolute returns with low correlations – to a wider audience while minimizing or eliminating many of the structural negatives including high minimums, high fees, long lock ups and lack of liquidity and transparency.

Bill Woodruff, Founder and Managing Principal, said “We are delighted to have someone with Mike’s experience and track record joining the firm. We look forward to further expanding our relationships with the financial intermediary community and providing access to non-correlated, absolute return oriented strategies to a market starving for quality solutions”.

Bandon’s flagship strategy DIRS – Directional Interest Rate Strategy – is quickly approaching its 5 year anniversary with historical average net ROR of +7.23% per year, annualized standard deviation of 6.56%, and very low correlation with the major equity indices, as evidenced by a correlation of -.08 to the S&P 500 and -.05 to the Barclays Aggregate from August of 2004 through June 30th of 2009.

Bandon’s strategies are offered in multiple structures with DIRS, the flagship strategy, currently offered as a separately managed account that can be held at most major custodians. A separately managed account is an increasingly attractive structure in light of the recent hedge fund abuses associated with private pooled vehicles.

Legg Mason Launches Tactical Allocation Fund

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Investment management company Legg Mason Inc. has launched a global multi-asset tactical allocation mutual fund named Legg Mason Permal Tactical Allocation Fund. The fund, which targets institutional and retail taxable and tax-exempt investors, will be managed by Legg Mason’s fund-of-hedge-funds affiliate, Permal Asset Management.

Legg Mason said that the fund is an opportunistic and diversified product, which seeks to benefit from any market condition and to outperform a traditional 60/30/10 (equity/fixed income/cash) portfolio over a medium-term time frame.

"Permal has an expertise in asset allocation and a deep global perspective and we believe they can find opportunities in these markets to deliver value to our clients." Matt Schiffman, Head of Americas Retail at Legg Mason said, "This is an innovative way to bring their fund of hedge fund expertise to traditional asset classes in a mutual fund offering."

The asset allocation strategy is designed to exploit perceived inefficiencies or imbalances in equity, fixed-income or other asset classes in any region or country, said the Baltimore, Maryland-based mutual fund group.

The fund will invest primarily in both passive and actively managed investment funds, to include specifically, affiliated and unaffiliated open-end mutual funds, unaffiliated closed-end mutual funds and exchange traded funds and notes, as well as cash equivalents and alternative investments.

Hedge Fund Manager SVM Launches Long/Short Fund

Tuesday, January 20, 2009 : Permalink

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Privately-owned investment management company, SVM Asset Management, is seeking approval from the Financial Services Authority for the launch of the long/short SVM UK Absolute Alpha Fund, which has a similar investment approach to their SVM Saltire fund, which returned +19.7% in 2008.

The fund, if approved, will have the flexibility to move from a net long to a net short position differentiating it from other absolute return funds, the company says. Managed by Colin McLean, returns will be driven by stock selection and the net position of the fund will be determined by whether the manager has more long or short stock ideas at the time.

"In 2008 just 31 of the stocks in the FTSE All Share ended the year higher, and 580 were down. It is therefore not surprising that few long only managers were able to profit," McLean says, "Without question this year will be challenging for the economy. However, at a company level there will be winners and losers and fundamental stock picking skills will be required to identify them."

The focus will be on generating positive returns over the long term rather than positive performance each month, as such SVM believes the appropriate time frame for investing in the new fund is at least three years.

Based in Edinburgh, SVM focuses principally on global fund of funds, UK and European equities.
