Judge hears arguments in Magna bankruptcy

CNBC – Attorneys for a hedge fund are asking for the appointment of an examiner in horse track owner Magna Entertainment’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case.

A hearing was scheduled Tuesday on the request by Greenlight Capital Offshore Partners, which wants an investigation of ties between Magna and its parent company, known as MID.

MID has played a dual role as both a potential bidder for MEC assets and one of its primary lenders.

Greenlight, an unsecured creditor of Magna as well as a large shareholder in MID, is concerned about the fairness of any asset sale.

Einhorn calls AAA rating a curse, shorts Moody’s

Marketwatch – David Einhorn, head of hedge-fund firm Greenlight Capital, called AAA credit ratings a curse and said he is betting against rating agency Moody’s, during a speech at a closely watched investment conference on Wednesday.

Einhorn said that many institutions with AAA ratings, including the U.S. government, turned that supposed benefit into a disaster by borrowing recklessly, according to a hedge-fund investor who attended the conference in New York and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The leading purveyor of AAA ratings is Moody’s (MCO), so Greenlight Capital is short that company’s shares, the investor quoted Einhorn as saying.

Bonds Slump in January, Hedge Funds Buy Gold

Gold Seek – This January was one of the worst on record for financial markets. US Treasuries crashed after enjoying a recession-beating run in 2008. Gold and silver were the only major asset class to end the month higher.

Hedge funds that previously ignored precious metals have become converts, with hedge fund star Greenlight Capital buying the yellow metal for the first time.

Another money manager Osmium Capital Management is offering a hedge fund priced in ounces of gold to protect it from exchange rate fluctuations. Subscriptions are in dollars, euros or pounds and then converted into gold.
