Is there a bull market around the corner?

Monday, May 4, 2009 : Permalink

Telegraph.co.uk – The stockmarket bulls have been very quiet of late, but that might be about to change. The FTSE100, made of up Britain’s biggest companies closed last week at an 11-week high at 4,243 and some fund managers are beginning to talk up a bull market.

One such bull is Anthony Bolton, who is worth listening to. Mr Bolton recently stepped down from running one of the UK’s most popular unit trusts, Fidelity Special Situations. The reason for its popularity was simple. Under Bolton’s stewardship the fund turned an outlay £1,000 into £147,000 over a 28 year period.

Darling Predicts Agreement on Hedge Funds, IMF at G-20 Summit

Friday, April 3, 2009 : Permalink

Bloomberg – The Group of 20 leaders will agree on new rules to rein in hedge funds and may more than double the resources of the International Monetary Fund, U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling said.

“There is a recognition that some hedge funds are systemically important,” Darling told Bloomberg Television in an interview today in London. “There will be an agreement there. Where you’ve got something that’s systemically important like a hedge fund, you need to know what’s going on there.”

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has struggled to allay the concerns of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy as they press for a crackdown on traders and lenders. Darling’s comments suggest consensus is now emerging among G-20 leaders in the London talks on measures to combat the financial crisis.

Cayman Islands Sets Milestone with 10000 Registered Funds

Monday, July 28, 2008 : Permalink

ITNews- Recent second quarter figures from the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA), have confirmed the achievement of a key milestone by the Cayman Islands financial services industry, with more than 10,000 investment funds currently registered in the jurisdiction.

At the end of June 2008 there were 10,037 funds on CIMA’s register, compared with 9,681 at the end of the previous quarter and 8,972 at the mid point of 2007. The current annual growth rate of 12% in net new hedge funds, which takes cancellations into account, is particularly striking in the context of the deterioration in global markets following the sub-prime meltdown and associated credit crunch.

"This is yet another round of impressive statistics from CIMA," said Mark Lewis, senior investment funds partner at Walkers. "The 10,000 barrier has been breached as hedge funds continue to be formed in the Cayman Islands, which remains the clear jurisdiction of choice for investment managers and their advisers around the world.
