Reuters – Harvard Management Co, which invests the Ivy League school’s multibillion dollar endowment, hired two investment managers away from two prominent hedge funds, the university said on Wednesday.
Emil Dabora, a senior managing director at Caxton Associates, will join as an equity portfolio manager while Michele Toscani, now at Fortress Investment Group, will join the international fixed income portfolio management team.
Boston Globe – State Street Corp., which specializes in serving institutional investors and wealthy customers, said Thursday it has been selected to provide hedge fund administration services for about $6 billion in assets advised by Caxton Associates.
State Street’s hedge fund administration company International Fund Services will provide accounting, fund administration, tax and risk services to five master-feeder fund structures managed by New York-based Caxton Associates and affiliates.
"Our decision to select IFS as our independent fund administrator was based on their long and significant experience servicing highly sophisticated and complex hedge funds in the industry," said John G. Forbes, chief operating officer of Caxton Associates.
West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.net) – Verizon Communications Inc. reported strong results in the third quarter 2008, reporting 59 cents in diluted earnings per share (EPS) in the third quarter 2008, compared with 44 cents per share in the third quarter 2007.
"Verizon again reported solid revenue, earnings and cash flow growth this quarter," said Chairman and CEO Ivan Seidenberg. "The strategic investments we made over the past few years continue to drive growth in wireless, enterprise, broadband and video.
"Although the capital markets and economy may present challenges, we will continue to execute on our business plan and invest for future growth," he said. "We increased the dividend 7 percent this quarter, reflecting confidence in continued growth opportunities. Verizon has a great set of assets and an employee team focused on creating value for our customers and shareholders."
Verizon had total revenues of $5.4 billion, or growth of 1.2 percent compared with last year’s third quarter. This was Verizon Business’ eighth consecutive quarter of year-over-year pro-forma revenue growth.
Verizon Business continued to expand its global network reach and capabilities, announcing during the quarter that the first phase of the Trans-Pacific Express submarine cable system directly connecting Mainland China, the U.S., South Korea and Taiwan is ready for service. The company also began a significant expansion of its operations in India, activating Private IP nodes in five major business centers following receipt of international and national long-distance licenses earlier this year.
New commercial customer agreements included CA Inc., First Data, H&R Block, Husqvarna and Kuwait Petroleum International Ltd. Verizon Business also signed new contracts with several U.S. government agencies.

West Palm Beach (HedgeCo.Net)- Michael Adair, former head of sales finance for Google North America is joining Glam Media Inc, a global web-publishing network, as Vice President of Corporate Development and Finance.
“I am excited to join Glam Media’s executive team as we leverage Glam’s vertical network model that it is ripe for expansion,” said Michael Adair. “Glam’s focus on creating the right network model for display advertising makes them one of the most exciting companies in media today.”
This newly created position involves evaluation and execution of Glam Media’s strategic investments, corporate development and corporate finance. The company is backed by hedge fund GLG Partners, Accel Partners, DAG Ventures, and Information Capital among others.
While at Google, Adair directed Google’s North American sales finance team and worked closely with Google’s president of advertising and commerce. Adair helped lead the team that managed strategic acquisitions responsible for over $3.5 billion in revenue, including dMarc, YouTube and DoubleClick.
