Beverley Hills hedge fund fraud halted

A hedge fund fraud that involved a pair of funds claiming to hold more than $800 million in assets has been halted, according to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

In a statement, the regulatory body said the two funds lost money and contain less than $1 million.

Bradley Ruderman is alleged to have raised more than $38 million from investors via the two hedge funds, Ruderman Capital Partners and Ruderman Capital Partners A.

He is accused of falsely claiming that the investment vehicles held positions in established securities such as Wal-Mart Stores, Apple and Microsoft, as well as stating prominent people were investors in his funds, when they were not.

Hedge funds’ unlikely leader

CNNMoney.com – When the headhunter first called Richard Baker in late 2007 and asked him if he was interested in becoming president and CEO of the Managed Funds Association – the hedge fund trade group – Baker thought it was a joke. "My reaction was, ‘You want me to do what?’"

An 11-term Republican Congressman from Louisiana, Baker was about as likely a candidate to run the MFA as Bill Gates is to run an Apple in his home office.

Over the years, Baker had emerged as a fierce and independent critic of the financial services industry – pushing for tougher regulation of hedge funds after the 1998 collapse of Long Term Capital Management.

Apple’s Jobs takes medical leave, shares tumble

Yahoo News - Apple Inc chief and tech visionary Steve Jobs will take a leave of absence till end-June because of health problems "more complex" than thought, backtracking on reassurances, stunning investors and sending its shares skidding 10 percent on Wednesday.

Jobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor, dropped his bombshell in a cryptic announcement on Wednesday — only nine days after he soothed jumpy investors somewhat by saying his dramatic weight loss over the past seven months was due to an easily treatable hormone imbalance. He had promised to remain at the helm throughout his treatment.
