Telegraph.co.uk – The City is staring into the abyss. If the proposed EU directive on hedge funds goes through, London will go the way of Bruges, Venice and Amsterdam: a once dominant financial entrepôt sidelined by more virile cities.

This, of course, is precisely what some in the EU want. I have lost count of how often I’ve heard voices raised in Brussels against London’s “jungle capitalism”. In the eyes of many Continental politicians, the Square Mile is parasitical: a lawless free city, whose lax regulations caused the financial crisis. They deeply resent the fact that 80 per cent of managed equity and hedge funds are based in London.

Michael Jackson’s death could benefit Dutch fund

Reuters Amsterdam – For Dutch pension fund ABP, Michael Jackson’s death could be good for business.

The passing of the man called "King of Pop" last week has created a run on his music, which is partly owned by Dutch state pension fund ABP. It is the world’s third-largest state pension fund after Japan’s and Norway’s.

"There are always certain songs that for whatever reason, in this case tragic, suddenly become very popular. The last fact is a basis for the investment," an ABP spokesman said.

ABP bought two music catalogues last year, including the rights to some Michael Jackson songs like "You Are Not Alone," according to the website of Imagem Music Group, which manages the music assets for ABP.

HudBay stokes interest of Indian mining giant

Globe and Mail – An Indian mining giant has quietly amassed a near 10-per-cent stake in HudBay Minerals Inc., HBM securing a major advantage over potential rival suitors for the Canadian zinc and copper producer that has hired advisers to explore the company’s strategic options.

Documents filed in Ontario Superior Court show Lakomasko BV, a privately held company based in Amsterdam, owns 14.5 million HudBay shares – about 9.5 per cent of the Toronto mining firm.
