Evening Standard – After dark in the National Gallery. The day’s visitors have long gone, and I’m walking round looking at the pictures with Sir Michael Hintze.

It feels very special. Without the crowds, it’s possible to see the paintings every which way, to go close up, to stand back, to linger and to ponder. Which is what you get if you’re a trustee of the place and you’ve given £2.5 million.
