Jason Karp on Investing Like a Fundamental Quant and Short-selling Process

(Valuewalk) Jason Karp was an early bloomer in the investment industry. Four years after leaving college in 2002 he was managing his own portfolio at George Weiss Associates. in 2005 he joined SAC Capital and in 2009 he joined Carlson Capital as a co-portfolio manager with company founder Clint Carlson. He struck out on his own during 2012 at 35, forming Tourbillon Capital Partners, which manages around $4 billion for clients today.

Tourbillon’s returns speak for themselves. Since inception the fund has earned a net annualized 13.8%, vs. 10.4% for the Russell 2000 and 2.8% for the HFRI Equity Hedge Index. However, according to those with knowledge of the matter, the hedge fund was down 13% through to May of this year.
