How to Tax a Robot

(Harvest) One of the biggest discussions in economic and political circles today is how automation and robotics will affect the labor force, global economies and government budgets. The Trump administration has focused on the labor issue and endeavors to bring back American jobs from overseas manufacturing locations. Yet this only solves part of the employment problem and ignores the elephant in the room in terms of job losses in the industrial sector. Statistics show that roughly 80-85% of manufacturing job losses in the U.S. in recent years has come from the automation of manufacturing processes and not the actual offshoring of jobs to lower cost countries. Additionally, the disruption caused by technology has far reaching implications outside of the manufacturing sector as well.
